patches Posted May 17, 2019 Share #4026 Posted May 17, 2019 macv.jpg Maj Gen James Hollingsworth in 1972 as MACV C.O. of the Third Regional Assistance Command, looks like a U.S. made Merrowed Edge Subdued MACV patch there. It's interesting to note that Hollingsworth isn't wearing his rank on his cover either in cloth or metal subdued form, which is atypical for generals in the period. It's interesting to note that Hollingsworth isn't wearing his rank on his cover either in cloth or metal subdued form, which is atypical for generals in the period. Look closely at the helmet he is wearing. The camouflage cover has some obvious wrinkles, the band is worn with the seam on the front and slightly off-centered and the flap is partially torn and coming out from underneath where the helmet strap protrudes on the side. Nothing major, but a little sloppy for a two star general. My guess? The picture looks like he was pulling the lanyard on a cannon. I'll bet he was inspecting an artillery unit at some firebase and was offered the chance of firing one of the artillery pieces. He was probably wearing a fatigue cap with his rank insignia embroidered on it. But the gun chief probably had a lot of balls and insisted that if the general wanted to fire the cannon, he had to wear a helmet. So the general was probably given someone else's helmet to wear. seanmc1114 Posted May 17, 2019 Share #4029 Posted May 17, 2019 +1 Also notice the difference in the condition of the fatigues between the two soldiers. The general's are starched, clean and not faded. The other soldier's are faded, dirty and wrinkled.
seanmc1114 Posted May 17, 2019 Share #4030 Posted May 17, 2019 123rd Army Reserve Command/123rd Regional Readiness Command. Note this First Sergeant, who should know better, is wearing the ribbon for his RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation incorrectly among his personal ribbons over his left breast pocket rather than over his right breast pocket. The soldier on the left is probably weearing OG-107 hot weather poplins. the General is not. More sateen finish with eppaulettes. I don't know what those were called. seanmc1114 Posted May 20, 2019 Share #4039 Posted May 20, 2019 177th Armored Brigade around 1988. This unit has a convoluted history and is one of several brigades that is authorized its own SSI but is currently assigned to either the First Army Division - East or First Army Division - West and for some reason wears the SSI of the First Army instead. The second photo shows current members of the 177th wearing the First Army SSI. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/177th_Armored_Brigade_(United_States)

seanmc1114 Posted May 20, 2019 Share #4041 Posted May 20, 2019 6th Infantry Division with AIRBORNE tab. I'm pretty sure the soldier on the right is assigned to the 1st Battalion 501st Infantry which was assigned to the 6th in Alaska from 1989 to 1998. Notice he is wearing the Belgian Fourragere, which the 1/501st earned, and his jump wings oval looks like the colors of the 501st. The soldier on the left is not wearing an oval or fourragere, and his flash does not look like the 501st.
seanmc1114 Posted May 20, 2019 Share #4042 Posted May 20, 2019 Scout Platoon of the 1st Battalion 501st Infantry in Alaska. These soldiers are also wearing the 6th Infantry Division SSI with AIRBORNE tab and 501st Infantry jump wings oval, but none of them appear to be wearing the Belgian Fourragere. seanmc1114 Posted May 20, 2019 Share #4044 Posted May 20, 2019 219th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade with AIRBORNE tab. I believe this soldier was assigned to Troop C (Long Range Surveillance) 2nd Squadron 152nd Cavalry. The DUI was formerly for the 152nd Infantry, but I believe it is now worn by the 152nd Cavalry. The oval and flash seem to be for the 151st Infantry Detachment.

seanmc1114 Posted May 21, 2019 Share #4050 Posted May 21, 2019 Military Intelligence Readiness Command. Note he has several ribbons indicating former Air Force Service. Also note that he has apparently mixed up his ribbons for the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal. On the AFRM ribbon next to his National Defense Service Medal ribbon he has several oak leaf clusters which are not authorized for that medal. ANd on his ARCAM ribbon on the bottom row, he is wearing an "M" device and Hourglass device.
