468abnarm Posted April 15, 2017 Share #2576 Posted April 15, 2017 There was E Co 21st Inf in the 197th OOB 67-68, maybe into 69. I gather this was a LRRP unit, but the DI though hard to tell looks like the 29th Inf rather then the 21st Inf. CO A (Ranger) 75th INF also existing at Fort Benning 69 - 70. Exact dates allude me right now. Obviously the photo pre dates that. Just an FYI as to Airborne elements of the 197th.

patches Posted April 16, 2017 Share #2579 Posted April 16, 2017 A second sighting of the Technical and Administrative Services patch in the RVN, this one really in action during Mini Tet. And the caption with foto. Moments after being wounded by enemy fire SFC Howard C. Breedlove (DASPO) receives medical attention from 2Lt. Richard M. Griffith (DASPO). This scene was received on Plantation Rd. in Gia Dinh, a suburb of Saigon. This action was part of what became known as the Post-Tet Offensive or the May Offensive of 1968. Several days later Lt. Griffith was also wounded.
patches Posted April 16, 2017 Share #2580 Posted April 16, 2017 And two more of the Technical and Administrative Services. These two photos came from this site, and I do believe they list and show photos of every GI who served at one time or another from the Department of the Army Special Photographic Office or DASPO section of the U.S. Army Technical and Administrative Services during the period. https://www.pritzkermilitary.org/explore/museum/permanent-current-upcoming-exhibits/faces-war-photography-front-lines-vietnam/specialist-5-mark-l-largent/ More on the Vietnam era DASPO, DASPO Pacific being the operative unit for South East Asia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_the_Army_Special_Photographic_Office
patches Posted April 17, 2017 Share #2581 Posted April 17, 2017 Don C. Faith during WWII with the 82nd, possibly taken in England before Overlord (the only two stars on his ETO ribbon would be for Sicily and Salerno), yet curiously he ain't wearin jump wings. Here's more fotos of Faith in the 82nd, as we see, clearly he was jump qualified, which makes odd he doesn't were the badge in sitting for this portrait. http://carentanlibertygroup.forumgratuit.org/t1649-don-faith-reposera-a-arlington

patches Posted April 21, 2017 Share #2585 Posted April 21, 2017 A group foto of Pathfinders of various units, I think it's the school at Ft Benning, of note is the III Corps patch with AIRBORNE tab seen on quite a few of them, these guys would be going to the Pathfinder Detachment 268th Aviation Battalion at Ft Hood no doubt, others we can spy so far, Green Berets, the 101st, what looks like a 8th Inf Div (that units Abn Element)
patches Posted April 24, 2017 Share #2586 Posted April 24, 2017 A more current view of the old Washington District, the officer is Robert Foley, he is a Medal of Honer recipient for actions in the RVN in 1966 and served on duty till 2000. I was wholly unaware of another Vietnam MOH seving on duty then, at least when I was in, knew about one, who for some reason thought was the only one, Drew Dix, that was because he was my Bn XO in the 4/9th Inf in Alaska 81-82. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_F._Foley

seanmc1114 Posted April 24, 2017 Share #2590 Posted April 24, 2017 Another shot showing the Aviation Center & School being worn during a review. It appears the officers on the left wearing the PRIMARY HELICOPTER tab are cadre while the members of the honor guard and warrant officer candidates are wearing the SSI without the tab. patches Posted April 24, 2017 Share #2591 Posted April 24, 2017 4th row, 3rd from the right. Does that look like foreign insignia to anyone one else? Maybe visiting Officers? Yes I seen that, definitely not an American GI, got a different type tape with foreign wings over it, which on enlarging/zooming appear to be Thailand. The one on his right too, he has no tapes at all, at first I thought he might be a Marine, but as we know, Marines wear Khaki waist belts Web, he's wearing a Black one, so maybe Thailand too, or ARVN. patches Posted April 24, 2017 Share #2592 Posted April 24, 2017 I think that tape may be the one seen in this topic, in this case the only thing different is the the korean based Thai unit insignia http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/138220-royal-thai-army-nco-shirt-7th-us-inf-div/

seanmc1114 Posted April 24, 2017 Share #2594 Posted April 24, 2017 Members of the Texas National Guard's 36th Infantry Division wearing SSI on their wool shirts. From the division's 1940 yearbook. It seems the wear of SSI on these shirts was somewhat rare.

seanmc1114 Posted April 24, 2017 Share #2596 Posted April 24, 2017 There's been some discussion in this topic about whether the 198th Light Infantry Brigade SSI was actually worn at Fort Hood prior to the unit's departure for Vietnam. This article from the September 1, 1967 Fort Hood Sentinel suggests that the insignia was worn at least a couple of month's before departure. Especially read the second paragraph. seanmc1114 Posted April 24, 2017 Share #2597 Posted April 24, 2017 Here's another article from the May 26, 1967 edition of Fort Hood's The Armored Sentinel that suggests when it was activated, the 198th was a part of the 1st Armored Division.
