The 196th Infantry Brigade was reactivated in 1998 with the mission of training all US Army, Pacific Army National Guard and Army Reserve forces to ensure they are prepared to deploy.

Airman, possibly a member of a tactical air control party, wearing the 101st Airborne Division SSI on his jungle fatigues

Two members of Company N 75th Infantry of the 173rd Airborne Brigade wearing different configurations of insignia.

First up is an NCO wearing a full color Ranger tab and scroll over a subdued 173rd SSI with a full color theater made 101st Airborne Division SSI as a combat patch.

Next is a LRRP wearing an oversized full color scroll without a 173rd SSI and full color CIB and jump wings on his tiger stripe fatigues.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for the blurry picture but this is a screenshot from a video of President Johnson's November 1967 visit to Fort Benning, Georgia. The captain accompanying him appears to be wearing an AIRBORNE tab over his 197th Infantry Brigade SSI. The 197th was tasked at the time with supporting the Infantry School's training activities. I'm not aware of any units on jump status assigned to the 197th unless it had a LRRP detachment, but the captain doesn't appear to have any oval behind his jump wings. Any thoughts?

The Capt is wearing a RANGER tab over an AIRBORNE tab over his 197th Inf Bde SSI. He has already been to RVN. Not aware of any airborne elements in the 197th.

Exactly. Of course the RANGER tab is an individual skill award so there is nothing unusual about that. But as you say, I don't know of any airborne elements attached to the 197th unless there was some sort of LRRP detachment. But usually when that is the case, jump wings are worn on an oval which doesn't appear to be the case here. The only other thing I can think of is if it is not in fact an AIRBORNE perhaps it's an HONOR GUARD tab.

There was E Co 21st Inf in the 197th OOB 67-68, maybe into 69. I gather this was a LRRP unit, but the DI though hard to tell looks like the 29th Inf rather then the 21st Inf.
