Here are photos of the Purple Heart and documents for Seaman 2nd Class Donald R. Rombalski, from Centralia, WA. He was a radio operator on the USS Arizona. He was killed December 7, 1941. His remains are with the Arizona.
His Purple Heart is at the Veteran's Memorial Museum in Chehalis, WA.

There is a photo of him with his family here:

Here is the engraving of his Purple Heart.

Here is a dated example from the USS Arizona . His last name starts with an A . The A and B examples generally are dated.

During my trip to Hawaii last week I was able to make an appointment to go to the storage facility where the historical objects not displayed at the USS Arizona Memorial are stored. Curator Scott Pawlowski and Museum Technician Stan Melman were gracious to allow me full access to the medals at the facility. I wasnt able to take many photos as time was limited and much of my time was spent talking to them about the medals in their collection. Part of the reason I was there was that I knew of a fraudulently engraved USS Arizona PH that had been donated 20 years ago by a collector, and I wanted to alert the Park Service that there was a " bad piece" in the collection. It was there and it was still bad!

I took photos of 2 posthumous USN Purple Hearts which I felt were unusual. One of them was engraved with the date! I have seen a couple others like it, so seeing this one in the collection, made me feel even better about that style.

Shown below are the Purple Hearts awarded to Acting Pay Clerk Paxton T. Carter and Seaman 2c Charles E. Brittan , both of whom paid the supreme sacrifice 12/7/41 on the USS Arizona.

I would like to credit the USS Arizona Memorial and the National Park Service with allowing me to share these photos.

So far, I've found that the PHs with date were engraved on two days...and that's it. I might see if I can get some research on Brittan to see if his falls on either of those dates or close to it. If anyone has any others, I would be very interested in knowing if they have researched them. If not, contact me and I might do a bit myself for you.

Hi Dave

I have also seen dated USN PHs also to Coral Sea and Midway casualties ( all last name ending with A or B ).

Just got back his research...his Purple Heart paperwork is dated July 5, 1943. Thus far, all of the Purple Hearts engraved with the date have had paperwork dated 2, 3, and 5 July. Interestingly, this was a Friday, Saturday, and Monday (July 4th was a Sunday in 1943).

Also interesting to note is that Brittan's accolade wasn't sent to his mother in San Francisco until 12 April 1944. Talk about a delay!
