Since having begun to view these early albums on Ebay - this beauty - is by far the best I've seen. The condition is simply remarkable for something a century old. It sold for $2225. this weekend. The sellers description...

 

Fresh from a NH attic, we are offering this REMARKABLE and HUGE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM which contains 553 original photographs taken by an unidentified UNITED STATES MARINE soldier during his duty as part of the Legation Guard in SHANGHAI and PEKING, CHINA and later during his assignment to the Phillipine Islands. This AMAZING photographic record chronicles the "China Marine's" mission from the time he landed in HAWAII to his landing at SHANGHAI, then on to PEKING and then to a later time when his (presumed) wife joined him in China and then they proceeded on to the PHILLIPINES. There are hundreds of REMARKABLE CAPTIONED PHOTOS which include the landing party of the Marines at Shanghai in 1913; 2 Photos of Chinese President Yuan Shi-Kiah; Views of French Marines, English and German Sailors at Shanghai in 1913; MANY photos of the U.S. MARINE contingent and LEGATION GUARD troops, commanders and compound including views of General Bell and other high ranking U.S. officers, Sergeants at the Foreign Legations taken at the English Legation Compound in June of 1914, US. Marines parading at Peking,Legations Guard photos to include U.S. mounted troops, band, and others. Views of the Chinese Red Cross including hand powered ambulances, hospital scenes and refugees boarding ships at Shanghai; Many Chinese Military photos at Shanghai; A view of the USS Albany at Shanghai; Many views of Chinese troops with guns, cannons and other armaments; views of the fires at Shanghai; a view of a VERY young Chinese girl titled "Soldier's Temptations"; Rural views of Chinese villages including camel trains, Large photos of different Buddha Temples and interiors; View of the TEMPLE of HEAVEN, HAND of PLENTY BUDDHA, PRINCESS TOMBS and the GREAT WALL; Views of PEKING to include: beggars, police station, fur markets, forbidden city, rifle range, Chinese theater, street bakers, street peddlers, Dali Llama Pagoda, New Year Temple, Yellow Temple, Temple of Heaven, Five Pagoda Temple, Top of the Tartar Wall, many street scenes, Bell Tower, 11 large photos of the 1913 FUNERAL of the EMPRESS DOWAGER ( wife of Emperor Guangxu) who died at the Forbidden City. Sizes of photos are (largest) 7 1/2" by 9 1/2" and smallest 1 3/4" by 2 3/4". Guaranteed HONEST, OLD and MARKET FRESH!!

Nice album....a bit older then the seller realized and filled with a number of stock photos that have been published elsewhere..... but seeing them together here finally puts them into context. Oh the research opportunities are endless with that album.....love the wall shot.....somewhere in that image sits John Russell, Thomas Holcomb Pam Bigler and Brooke Astor. Will be neat to speculate who the owner was and I am thinking either joined the USS Rainbow or another ship of the Fleet after leaving Peking. Darrell thanks for posting them here for research
