All the wartime M8/M8A1 scabbards had the rawhide thongs on them as they came from the factory. That nylon cord looks like a much more recent add on. As late as the 1960's and '70's they used a boot lace...first cotton and later nylon but I've never seen a nylon cord such as is on your M8.
