Missing war films

How about a list of old war movies you've seen that seem to have vanished. As a kid, I saw "Up from the Beach" with Cliff Roberstson and Red Buttons on TV. It was actually filmed in Normandy. Another was "The Immitation General" with Glenn Ford. I'm hoping someday fresh copies will show up on DVD. Anyone know of others?

AMBUSH BAY-Mickey Rooney,Jim Mitchum.Might be on DVD,Been more than

a few years since it's been on TV. TCM seems to always show the same thing

every Memorial Day weekend. This one could be a nice change for once.

ATTACK-Jack Palance,Belle&Blade might have this, anyway been a while on this

one also. This one freaked me out as a kid when Palance got his arm shredded by

that german tank.

"The park is mine" Starring Tommy Lee Jones. This movie is about a Vietnam veteran got pissed off because people don't support veterans so he seized the control of the whole central park in NYC. Not really a war movie but cool movie related to veterans though. It never was made in DVD so it became a "rare" movie.

Cheers.

My God, I remember Up from the Beach on WWOR-TV as a Kid. never seen it anywhere since. I remember something about German POWs in that.

You can watch The Park is Mine on You Tube, someone uploaded the entire thing. was never as good as the Book frankly.

Secret War of Harry Frigg

PT-109

Fighter Squadron-(with Edmund O'Brien and Lovely P-47's)

Redball Express with Jeff Chandler

Retreat Hell!

All fine movies, all Forgotton by DVD makers.

Fighter Squadron Especially is sad. It was filmed in Technicolor, used real P-47 Thunderbolts and the cast was good.

How about the Gary Cole vehicle, "Son of the Morning Star?" I'm not a 7th Cav Reg't expert, but I thought that this TV miniseries was done rather well and that Cole portrayed a pretty decent Custer. I know that it has been out on VHS for some years now, but not DVD.

How about "The Hunters"? A 1950's movie about USAF F-86 fighter pilots in the Korean War staring Robert Mitchum and Robert Wagner. I first saw it in a theater as a kid when it first came out. Neat air-to-air dogfights, even tho F-84's had to stand in for Mig-15's. Parts of this are on You Tube, but I don't think it's on DVD.

It's been shown a lot just lately a least 3 times in the last few months. I believe

on Fox Movie Channel, for those folks that have Charter Cable.

I've got The Hunters on DVD too. It is one of those I picked up cheap for a $1 or $2 at some place like Wal-Mart. I haven't watched it so can't speak of quality.

My wife finally found Parachute Battalion on DVD for me but I was disappointed to find it was a copy of an old VHS tape. It wasn't reproduced at good quality.

I have been looking for Mountain Troops done about 1943 or 44 but haven't had any luck finding it in VHS or DVD.

Kjones: Just got through watching the part you referred to for the first time in I-don't-know-how-many-decades; it literally gave me nightmares as a kid.

It is a great movie. I know it was released on vhs. Hoping for the dvd.

 My pleasure, buddy! It sure had been a long time for me; a lot of familiar old movie (including comedies) faces in that one!

Another one I haven't seen since I was a squirt is "Home of the Brave" (1949), with Lloyd Bridges and James Edwards about, among other things, a Black Marine's personal dealings with incidents of racism in his life. This movie was the first time I ever saw some of them neat Helmet Covers :w00t: It's available in VHS, but not on disc. I'm tempted to get it anyway...

For me it,s Pride of the Marines with John Garfield playing Al Schmidt. I saw it as a kid and it always stuck with me.

Home of the Brave was Army, not Marines and a Fine Movie, Frank Lovejoy was the Sgt. who survives with Moss(Edwards), Bridges gets captured and tortured by the Japanese IIRC.

Not on video that I know of but it turns up on the more obscure cable channels from time to time. I just watched most of it last week on a rarely-watched network. Other than the incredible buzz job (coming inches away from touching the tail wheel on the ground and feet away from smacking into a parked B-17) in the middle, it’s really a crummy movie. Take a good look at this screen capture, this is after the plane started climbing out : http://www.aerovintage.com/1000-6.jpg

I’d love for Bill Mauldin’s other movie projects to come out of video. “Red Badge of Courage” is out, but “Teresa” and “Up Front” and “Back to the Front” are not but in all fairness, I know the latter three are all not-so-great films as I’ve seen them all on cable over the years.

Both are available on Netflix. I've found a lot of the older obscure war movies, both foreign and US, in the Netflix inventory.
