Smedley sports a beautiful example of the Breuninger hat EGA on his cap. Smedley entered service in 1898, which is probably when he received or bought the hat device. Photos like these can help pinpoint dates on certain EGAs. I know that the Breuninger is at least 1890's, still have to see if it goes as far back as the 1880's.

Excellent photo, Alec. I'm going to add a couple more for everyone's enjoyment. These were taken in Shanghai in 1927.

Classic, Alec! Is this from your personal collection?

From one of the archives I searched through. Don't recall which one at the moment.

He is wearing a 1904 pattern cap and blues so this EGA was a carry over if your dating is correct.

No way to know for sure unless a photo shows up of him as a 2nd Lieutenant, but this is probably his first hat device. I have photos of ranking officers in the 1930's still sporting their Breuninger hat device. They are treasured now and were treasured back then I suspect. There is no other similar insignia that is as distinctive. Each piece is hand done which makes each a one-of-a-kind art piece.

were Marines equiped with the UK Lee Enfield SMLE N°1MK III* ???

some British officers around, aren't they???

These " Marines" looks too Brit in my opinion.

Brit unifoms/ pleated pockets not USMC pattern, puttees ( In 1927) presence of brit officers, SMLE, hence the cartridges belts are of US origin, as are the US 1910 canteens.

Your opinion please

Teufelhund: As the caption says they are not Marines. They are American members of the American Company of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps (SVC). The officer with Butler is Capt J.W. Baldwin who commanded the SVC Company 1927-28....I just picked up a portrait of Baldwin but didn't want to post it here as it would distract the thread from Butler. The American SVC had a mixture American (BAR) and Brit (enfields) weapons. Although photos taken in 1932 show the Americans armed with Springfields.

Thank you for the clarification, but as you might know, I am not a specialist of this period in the Corps History

But why in the hell were Marines armed with SMLE in China ( Standardisation of amos with the Brits ???)
