This post features a decal for the U.S. Navy Bomb Disposal School featuring the image of the Disney character Max Hare. Disney artists created this design in late 1942.

Prior to World War II both the Army and Navy had separate bomb disposal schools. The Naval school was known as the Mine Disposal School and was located at the U.S. Naval Gun Factory in Washington, D.C. In January 1942 the U.S. Naval Bomb Disposal School was established as a separate school at the same location. In the summer of 1942 the Bomb Disposal School moved form the Gun Factory to the American University Campus.

The school’s mission was to instruct Navy personnel the business of bomb disposal. Some Army officers also received training at the Navy School. Because little captured enemy ordnance existed, the courses taught were theoretical. Initial schooling lasted eight weeks. This was expanded to fourteen weeks as more data and captured enemy items became available.

The school grounds consisted of five acres of campus grounds and ten buildings rented from the university. Staff consisted of roughly 90 officers and enlisted men. In 1945, the mine and bomb disposal schools merged and were relocated to the U.S. Naval Recruiting Station at Belleview Annex in Washington, D.C.

A patch featuring the design was also made. The patch was to be worn by men only while attending the school and was supposed to be removed from their uniform once they were posted to a unit.

That brought back childhood memories. In the late 50's and early 60's a I lived not far from Indian Head, Maryland where the Bomb Disposal School had relocated in 1946. Then we moved to Navy housing in Washington DC literally across the fence from the Naval Gun Factory, where my Boy Scout troop met in an old builidng. The Gun Factory had seemingly no activity going on but as an 11-year-old just the name of it intrigued me - the same with the Bomb Disposal School: seeing that name on the signs inspired awe for what must have been going on there.
