Salvage Sailor Posted March 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2010 I found this on the Ancestry.com bulletin board while researching Swanson canteens today. I was quite surprised to find that they are also a Militaria research reference source..... Lost and Found World War II US Canteen Laura Classification: Query Surnames: swanson I am a Chinese girl, I got a canteen from an elder lady, that is a canteen , which pressed at the bottom "US SWANSON 1945", I am looking for the owner of the canteen. I dont't know if anyknow know this "swanson" Re: World War II US Canteen Jim Classification: Query Surnames: The USS Swanson was a navy destroyer during world war II. It was commissioned in 1940. The stamp on the canteen is for the ship, not a person. For more information on this ship, go to www.google.com, and type in USS Swanson. Hope this is helpful. Re: World War II US Canteen Bob C Classification: Query Surnames: Swanson Laura, I think maybe the canteen may have belong to a person named Ursel Swanson who lives in Columbas Georgia. I think if it had been a US Navy canteen it would have been stamped USN. I think the owner of the canteen put his own name there. Bob Wow, I sure hope they can find Swanson and return this priceless wartime artifact to him. I suggest using a magnetic compass
pathfinder505 Posted March 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 23, 2010 The Swanson was in the the North Atlantic and then Operation Torch before being sent to the Pacific. Maybe a canteen fell overboard and did make it to China. Wonder if there was a genie in it?
Bob Hudson Posted March 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 23, 2010 Now what I heard happened is that Uvaldo Sylvester Swanson was issued a canteen made by Swanson when he was stationed aboard the USS Swanson, and one day while Mrs. Swanson was tossing out the trash including some of those old shiny aluminum Swanson's TV dinner trays, she accidentally tossed out Swanson's shiny Swanson from the Swanson along with the Swansons. Salvage Sailor Posted March 23, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted March 23, 2010 I think I've opened a can of spam here. I've got no time to get hot on this Swanson trail, I'm still looking for this Vollrath character. I've traced him to every battlefront of WWII & Korea. He has to have been the largest canteen hoarder of the century. WHERE IS VOLLRATH??!?
Bob Hudson Posted March 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 23, 2010 I'm still looking for this Vollrath character. I'd thought he was bad guy in Harry Potter? I do have to say though, that nothing we make up can be as funny as those real posts: even Ursel is real:

Salvage Sailor Posted June 12, 2021 Author Share #8 Posted June 12, 2021 Perhaps Ron Swanson can provide a lead, “Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into Swansons.” But then again, perhaps not “When people get too chummy with me, I like to call them by the wrong name to let them know I don’t really care about them.”
