Worthington, Mascot 3rd Class, USS Fomalhaut (KA-5). At the bottom it says:

 

"Given to L.E. Pierce, Co. "C" 18th Marines, at Guadalcanal on Aug 1, 1943 by Fulton Pence S2/C"

Absolutley PRICELESS some of those pictures..my particular favourite is the 26th Infantry Div (sic) GI smoking the cigar and riding the truck into Germany with his dog pal......that sums it all up for me the "look" on both their faces.

 

There is also a picture in the John M Behan book Dogs of War with the German Shepherd riding on the bonnet of a Jeep..what an awesome picture

did you know there was a dog awarded the siver star on sicily! it was later recended I have the article somewhere.The story goes that a german machine gun nest had GI's pinned down and the dog assualted the nest wounding two germans and sending the third running,the dog was shot across the top of the head which left a permanent reverse mohawk.

Didnt know that Dustin.....though i recall there were a few honoured USMC Dogs....

 

Am i correct in thinking that ALL USMC dogs were awarded the rank of PFC ?
