Steel Navy Sailor

For a change of pace I thought I would do a thread on a Navy Grouping I picked up a short while ago. The group consisted of two small photo albums and the man's sea papers. This man enlisted in 1903 and continued to serve until 1934 when he retired. Interestingly he was briefly recalled to active duty during WWII. He served on the following ships: USS Petrel, USS Princeton, USS Nebraska, USS Philadelphia, USS Washington, USS Oregon, USS Raleigh, USS Leonidas. Most of the photos in this album date from his gunboat time on the USS Petrel and USS Princeton.

The sailor was a cook on the USS Petrel and the USS Princeton. These next two images show him and some of the other cooks and commissary stewards...

Judging from the contents of the album I would say the owner joined the Petrel while it was in Hawaii...There are a number of early Hawaiian images. I've chosen to show this image labeled the road to Diamond Head as I'll bet the area looks different today!

While in Hawaii the sailor recorded the arrival of a US Army transport heading to Asia....this shuttle service allowed the troops a short stay (usually less then a full 24 hours) to explore before heading to Asia. Here he shows the troops disembarking for their visit.

Although fading, is this one of my favorite images.....labeled Midway Island March 1905. The cable station is clearly visible in the center of the image. A neat side fact, I've got several descriptive letters written during this same month from the Marine commander on the island...so to see it as the marine described it is rather cool.

The album had several pictures of Marines. This image shows two marines in full dress. Probably taken the last year this helmet and uniform were authorized.

At some point the Petrel went north to Alaska and the album contains a number of pictures taken of Kiska, Dutch Harbor, and British Columbia. This image was labeled coaling party Kiska

Also the ship entered Mexican waters during that same year. The caption on this one is "Skid Road Acapulco Mexico"... I'll guess this street may have seen sailors before.

The album contains a series of photos of the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Shortly after the quake occurred the USS Princeton was dispatched from San Diego toward the stricken city. This faded image shows the deck of the Princeton lined with relief supplies as it steams toward San Fran.

Following his gunboat days he spent time on Battleships and some shore assignments.....The inscription on this picture said this person is a "Yeomanette"...its a woman but beyond that I don't know....

Lastly during his short activation 1942-43.....mainly shore assignments around Puget sound. He died in the early 1960's.

That is an INCREDIBLY historical group! Please make sure you take good scans of everything should something ever happen to the albums. You are in possession of a huge amount of never-before-seen history! Thanks for posting it!
