I'm not sure, but is this trooper (Sept 1944) wearing a M43 High Neck Sweater?

It looks like there is a strap over the wool shirt?

General Apathy

Daan, interesting shot, personally I think he has a shirt, then possibly an highneck sweater, I think he then has an M-41 jacket, topped off with an M-43 jacket. That's as I can make it out from the photograph that you posted and the quality of the photograph that I can see. ???

Cheers ( Lewis )

Hi Lewis, thank you for your reply! An M41, that's interesting!

He probably was a Runner, so isnt this getting pretty hot then, when running from A to B?

So you don’t think he is wearing the sweater and a wool shirt under his M43?

What 4 button shirt do you mean?

What 4 button shirt do you mean?

Shirt, Knit, od (Stock Number55-S-7500 thru 55-S-7520)

Lightweight undershirt with 4 buttons, shwon in the 1943 QM3-1 Catalog Page 11, but not shown in the GI Guide...

I have one laying around somewhere, will post pictures if I find it...

Thank you, I really appreciate it.

I also have a couple more questions about this photo, shown below is the complete trooper on the photo.

paraehv4hk8.jpg

paraehv3nx0.jpg

1. 2 straps, one from the bandoleer, and one from the gasmask bag, or... ?

2. Maybe an identification flag?

3. M-1917 ammo belt?

4. Musette bag?

5. An M3 with leather scabbard or the M8? Also is there an parachute first aid packet or a different version?

Can anyone help me by giving a complete list of gear and clothes he is wearing?

This is probably a Runner of 506th during Operation Market Garden in Eindhoven, Holland in 1944. This photo was taken in the Frankrijkstraat and I got this from my grandparents who also lived in Eindhoven during the war.

(The reason why I ask this, is because I want to make a display that is going to look exactly the same as on the photo as it was taken in Eindhoven)

1. I only see one strap from the bandoleer. The rest is the side of the chest pocket and button and plead from the M43 jacket

2. Yes, it seems like a torn ID Brassard

3. I think it is a British Made M1923 Cartridge Belt

4. Canteen Cover on the right hip. Flap is just barely visible, Cap is hidden behind arm....

5. M3 with a pouch strapped to the leg... Doesn't look like the standard Parachute FA pouch to me.... Maybe a British cloth FA Bandage taped together?

Thanks thumbsup.gif

At number 1 you see 2 straps, one is on the right of the bandoleer strap and it appears to be darker then the M43 jacket.

And it is indeed the canteen, stupid that i didn't noticed that think.gif

On the photo you can't see the scabbard of the M3 (only a little tip at the bottom of the pouch), but what would be the best scabbard for this display? Also strange that only 1 lace probably is holding the knife and pouch on his leg.

You also see a long strap between the canteen and the bandoleer, is that a strap from his suspenders (maybe because he is such a little guy hehe)? Could he be wearing a musette bag on his back?

I don't see the second strap, only a fold of the M43 jacket

The long strap is one of the straps of the M36 suspenders completely unrolled... other straps of the suspendres are hanging both left and right

Scabbard is the M8, visible by the web strap holding the handgrip

This is what I was talking about, looks like a strap to me? If it was a fold of the jacket, then I would assume the button isn’t visible?

To me that looks like the side of the chest pocket with the top of the pocket flap just visible where it's sewn against the jacket and the rest is the fold of the jacket with one button just visible....
Besides there's nothing visible hanging where that supposed strap should exit below...

Thank you very much for your help Johan! thumbsup.gif

I am still wondering what that pouch is on his leg is, also how do you think the M3 is attached to his lag, with a leg strap maybe? Or just that 'lace' that is visible on the photo?

Also under number 3 on the photo (sticking out above bandoleer), could that be a regular first aid kit?

That is a wonderful image. Lots of interesting details from it such as the 5 hole chinstrap being worn. Superb really.

Hello Daan,
