Seems these were just as uncommon then as they are now...
Here's one of the few pictures showing these crates being handled during WW2; Glidermen of the 81st AAA Bn/101AB Div loading a similar crate into a Waco Glider for Market Garden, September 1944. A second crate and an M3A4 Utility Hand Cart is also visible in the photo.

A similar pin as shown above worn on the Garrison Cap of a GI from the 116th Infantry upon return to NYC aboard the USS Lejeune on 4th January 1946...
