Armor Triangles: Real vs. Made For Collectors

Seller describes this as "rare, and the 4 is different". Yes, it's probably the first fake like this he has seen, and yes, the 4 is different. While most collectors know there were a few ME patches made during WW 2, the Germans were not making them at any time, either. This is a copy of a German made 14th AD. All the cable colors are off, it's embroidered at the wrong angle, jeeze.

MilRGRHistory

This is certainly a neat topic as I have seen dozens of variations of the armor triangle. I mainly collect patches from units of which I was/am a member of so I don't have many of these but here are my two favorite examples for 1st Armored Division. The left obviously being unnumbered but I believe it to be a legitimate WWI or post-WWI patch.

Just about every WW 1 patch was post war. Your armor patch was known as "Tank Corps", and worn by some of the battalions and brigades. Not a lot of patches for individual tank units in WW 1.

Hi guys,

Can anyone offer any suggestions on this numbered triangle?

It is attached to an officers OD field shirt.

It's in a local dealers store.

Thanks in advance,

X

Hey Tredhed2

I was wondering what the experts on the topic though as to the originality (or likely originality) of the patch?

I am not an expert on numbered triangles by any means.

I assume the unit is the 22nd Tank battalion of the 11th Armored division.

Thanks,

X

Thanks for the info tredhed2, I couldn't find any info on the 22AD in Stanton's WW2 order of battle and your info explains why. :)

Here is a nice example of why they aren't made like this any more. The 12 was directly embr into the patch and there are hardly any cables on the back. There are very few of the cables from the 92 Cav on the back, too.

This belongs to a vets daughter and I am researching his WWII history and artifiacts. The added "DAREDEVIL" banner does not feel the same as the 740th; almost silk like.

The DAREDEVIL tab in your post is one of two types known for the battalion. These are woven and came in a long strip. Note how the lettering color is reversed on the back.

Thanks tredhed2 for the information. Her father was mechanic in the 740th (even have a "Crew Tank Manual on the Light Tank M24") and she is now headed back to the home in Iowa as she has his Ike jacket with patch.

FWIT - the added numbers on this patch are the type you want to see. They were done c. 1945 while on occupation duty, not 2015 in someone's garage.

Here's a new fake.

Someone removed some of the threads from a post-WW II 22nd Armored Div patch and inked in the bottom part of the second "2" to make it a "3" and create a 23rd Armored Div patch. There NEVER was a 23rd AD. There was a 23rd Armd Engr Bn and a 23rd AIB during WW II, but this is a post war patch. The only reason that patches exist which appear to be "23rd AD" patches were because a dealer made them, put them in his book, and voila - instant "credibilty". In fact, if you have one, or see one at a show and are tempted, compare the colors of the cables to a real AD patch and you will see they are off, not quite the correct color.

I am in receipt of more 740th patches from this Vet's daughter. Interestingly, 1 is easily recognizable as being taken of his uniform. In addition and as colleague tredhed2 has stated, the "740" is hand sewn on the patch as each one is unique. And finally, the last patch is naked of the "740" but does have the "DAREDEVIL" sewn on.
