Here is another one of my additions. Fixed loop with metal insignia welded on, and matching painted liner. The lid looks to have also been painted at one time, and the liner had metal insignia also. Looks like they were swapped around. The pot and liner have a laundry number, and would greatly appreciate any help in Id'ing this man. Also the pot is marked with some red marks. Any thoughts, or just done by a kid?

I think from my hands on, that it was purposefully put on there by the chaplain, why..I have no idea. I do know that his helmet came from a yard sale in Des Moines, Iowa about 20 or so years ago. I just wish the story came with it. and I wish I could kick the person in the butt that sold it to coy..I think I may go do that right now!LOL

I am sure someone has an almost complete list of Chaplains during ww2. Maybe even with SN's.

That would be a heckuva list: on VJ Day when the war ended there were just over 8,100 chaplains on duty: 10 years before there were 300.

Perhaps Kenneth Morford, 0-515844, Episcopalian.

1LT, 1943.

Nice lid.

Hey thanks! I would think the odds of it being someone else is quite slim. Any chance of knowing what division or unit he served?

No not at this time. I believe I had researched the same person within the past year. Nothing more came up.

Well the last initial, last four of the serial number and being a chaplain all point to a match. Sadly he died at a fairly young age.

This is from the Dixon Illinois newspaper in May 1952.

Everytime I see this helmet Steve, I just sit back and look imagining the story that must go with it. I hope your able to find more on this Chaplain and Pastor. What really caught my attention is that he was the same age when he passed away as I am now!

Steve, I found a bit more information on your Chaplain. Before becoming the pastor of Grace Episcopal Church he is shown as an Assistant pastor in 1947 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Saugatuck, Michigan. I don't see this information in the obituary but, he is listed at the very end of a church history document here: http://www.sdhistoricalsociety.org/sdhs/AllSaintsLR.pdf I know it's not much but, maybe if the church is still in existence, they may have some information for you. I would also contact the National Episcopal Church: http://ecusa.anglican.org/ They may have a historical archives that they can search for you.

Steve,

This may be of interest; some years ago in Tennessee a mandolin turned up with the Chaplain's name and serial number in question:

It might be a tangled web, but there are at least other folks who were also trying to find out more about him.

Good Luck !
