Wailuna gets a big shoutout from me here on this forum for doing me a big favor. I have found many uniforms, many not i.d. others have been. But for years since I was a kid was told story of my cousin Ruben Munoz who was a paratrooper who was killed in 1944 in Holland. Remember my aunts pic of him over fireplace. Wailuna asked me for a little info, and a few months later I now found out he was killed while serving with Co. F, 2nd Bn. 501st, in Holland. He sent me more paperwork than I could of ever dreamt of coming across. I had two cousins who were paras in WW2, Jose Vasconcelos who was w/ the 517th, and Ruben. Joe, made it home, but Ruben didn't. My cousin Richard Macias, 5th Mar.Div was killed on Iwo Jima, but I have seen documents of him. But Ruben till now was a phantom. Thanks to Wailuna, he isn't anymore. A big thank you here on the forum!

General Apathy

Hi Louie, if you don't mind me adding into this thread with my praise for wailuna, last week I posted some photos in the pinned thread on ' show your WWII soldier photographs ' in the Ephemera & Photographs section. I made mention of the photographers studios, and within two days wailuna came back with information on the photograper Owen Stout.

Pleased to see that he found out so much about your cousin Ruben for you. ;)

Cheers ( Lewis )

That's my Dad! Great to hear that his research is appreciated on the forum. He has a unique talent to dredge up information from unlikely resources and get interesting results. Busy as he is it's nice to see that he still maintains an interest and contributes when he can. JR

His name is Jose Vasconcelos, but we all called him Joe. He lived in Canoga Park, CA for as long as I remember. He passed away a few years ago.

It has to be him I would figure. It is not a common name. Years ago he told me he still had his jump uniform, but don't know what ever happened to that. I have a pair of his wings which he gave my brother who was in the 82nd Airborne. He gave them to my brother when he got out of jump school in 1953 and had them engraved w/ the date etc..These were wartime pinbacks. I never kept in contact w/ his wife, never really knew her much, and by the time he passed away lost all contact w/ them. Did this come out of CA??? I remember as a kid the WW1 German helmet, all rusty he kept in the garage. He brought it back because he found it in a field left there from the First War. Glad it went to a collector and not the shredder like so many other uniforms.

Wake

thank you very much for your input.

I personally can't make my mind up.. The ribbons have various wear state (faded/unfaded colours..) but the seller does hold a lot of airborne items 5agreed this is no quality assurance) but maybe he managed to find all the bits belonging to that vet by following leads and added them to the jacket?

Either way I think it is a shame... the Jacket as is, is a big plus... I've also asked for Bronze star and Purple hear medal pictures which I'll get soon I suppose.

Thanks again for you input

All the best

JEB

The 517th booklet at the bottom is a modern copy they sell on amazon for $10. Im not even sure if the album photos came with it. Also without the medals being named or attributed Id say its a safe bet they were added as well. May not be the seller that added this stuff but more likely the previous owner.
