rrobertscv Posted April 17, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 17, 2007 Picked this up at an antique mall this week-end. He only wanted $10, at first I walked away, but I went back and bought it. What is the red, white and blue pin he is wearing? Here is the writting on the back: Our Captain Taken April, 1940 Graduated from Ripon College same year June 10, 1940 He dressed for reception at Eagle's field. Picture taken at Wiglis Photo studio in afternoon on June 9, 1940

duarte1223 Posted April 17, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 17, 2007 What's strange is that it says "Our Captain" but he's got Lt. bars on his shoulders. Probably just an older photo. Excellent colorized photo, thanks for sharing! Adam
rrobertscv Posted April 17, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted April 17, 2007 I emailed the college this morning and they were really interested in it. They are going to forward it to the school historian. I will update when I hear from them. Any ideas about the reb, white and blue pin?
CNY Militaria Posted April 17, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 17, 2007 Interesting that he was commissoned and already a 1LT before evn graduating! Its a pre-war uniform, so I am assuming that by the end of WWII, he was a captain.
craig_pickrall Posted April 17, 2007 Share #7 Posted April 17, 2007 The reference to Captain could mean CAPT of the Corps of Cadets in ROTC. It may be he was comissioned as a 1st LT due to his ROTC experience and the build up to war that had started in 1940.

Nice pre war photo.I am guessing the riggon has something to do with his cadet days or possibly he had seved in the national or state guard and this is a service ribbon for years served.I say this as it is quite similiar in color to ones used here in Iowa by our state for the 5 years service medal.Other years exist only the patten ancolor of the ribbon varies. 776thamtrac Posted April 20, 2007 Share #9 Posted April 20, 2007 Once again I find out what a small world it is. I have a grouping in my collection from 1st Lt. Charles Diekow who was a Ripon ROTC grad of the class of 1943. The school once had a listing of all ROTC Alumni posted. However I just looked and it has been removed now. As for my Diekow grouping I came across it several years ago at an estate sale. The whole footlocker full. I'll just post the pics of his ROTC insignia here for now and if anyone else is interested I'll post pics of the rest soon. Thought you would like to see the Ripon DI's for sure though. Neat photo! rrobertscv Posted April 20, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted April 20, 2007 That is great, thanks for showing them. I still haven't heard anything from the college.
776thamtrac Posted April 20, 2007 Share #11 Posted April 20, 2007 I looked back at my records again and I happened to print out the ROTC rosters from the school web page a long time back. Maybe we can figure out who this guy is. Also I made an error, Diekow was in the class of 42. As a note here he was an Armored Infantry officer with 9th Armored. rrobertscv Posted May 11, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted May 11, 2007 I just heard back from the college historian and she said she had been looking through the yearbooks and just by "eyeballing", this looks like the man in my portrait. I haven't had time to do any research yet. 1940 yearbook, Howard Searl, Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Cadet Captain of Company B
