Decorated WWII- Vietnam Pilot's grouping!

Hey Fellas!

Got this grouping in today and it really is great. Included in the group is a blue four pocket tunic (nice rack of ribbons) and vanguard stamped wings, black mess dress jacket (and trousers with suspenders!) with a real nice set of mini-medals -- I particularly like the four tiny clusters on the Air Medal -- and bullion shoulder boards, and lastly, a white dinner jacket. All large sizes, named to Colonel Nicholson. It'd be great to try and place his Legion of Merit, but I imagine that would be almost impossible without his first name and the period in which it was awarded. Anyhow, hope ya'll enjoy the photos!

Best,

Beau

PS This group doesn't really fit into my collecting interests, so if any of you are interested in a sale or trade please let me know! :)

Interesting group! Wonder why he sat out the Korean War?

I agree Justin, peculiar indeed. I imagine he received the Legion of Merit during Vietnam.

He may not have received his LOM for service in Vietnam. This could have been awarded when he retired, but I still think it is researchable. You may want to post a question in the medals section of the forum.

As to sitting out Korea, he is a Reservist or National Guard. May have went in right after WWII and was not called up for active service in Korea. Vietnam came around and they needed him again, maybe not as a pilot, but in a different specialty.

You split up the grouping on ebay?

Other than the last name Nicholson (the mess dress jackets and pants aren't named, I'm assuming they belonged to him), I have no other means of identifying the gentleman. Nobody showed any interest in buying the group or trading for it on the forum. Should I cancel them and sell it all as one group? Typically, that only makes sense when the items are all named, not just attributed, and usually when there is more substantial provenance for the item. Its a tough decision to make, should I remove the auctions and keep the group together? I realize the necessity to preserve the integrity of the grouping, but I was always under the impression that without solid provenance and full name, the value of the group diminishes when its sold together. What should I do?

Best,

Beau

CNY Militaria

I am not personally interested in the group, however I think you might fare better if they are sold together--for the sake of keeping it together, as well as those people looking for "groupings." I know that some collectors are drawn more to groups instead of individual items so that there is more history or research potential behind it. I bet with enough time and resources, someone may be able to nail down who this COL was.

Just my .02.

Thanks!

Justin
