New Romantic Posted April 11, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 11, 2007 My M1912 ration bags only has one of these straps pictured below. Are these necessary for Medical corpsman use? Or could the ration bags be worn as a pack without being hooked to the belt?
alibi Posted April 12, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 12, 2007 Do you have a complete set...a left and a right? When configuered as a back pack the straps pass over the shoulders (one strap per shoulder). When used as in the manner of saddle bags the straps are in an X pattern and pass over the cantle of the saddle. In either configuration a missing strap makes the Ration Bags as a set unserviceable. Turn in the unserviceable bag to the company supply sergeant for repair or exchange for a serviceable bag...make sure you get the correct side. If that doesn't work do a midnight exchange with your buddy and let him deal with the problem. You can probably get away with this if you haven't blabed to anyone that you have an unserviceable bag and your unit hasn't marked the bags per Army Regulations to prevent this kind of "exchange." New Romantic Posted April 12, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted April 12, 2007 Here is met set, both sides dated 1918 manufactured by the RIA. When I got these ration bags that strap was actually hooked to the small D ring on the top of the rear of the pack. I couldn't figure out where it actually was supposed to go til I looked at a period manual showing the strap hooked to the suspenders.

rayg Posted April 12, 2007 Share #7 Posted April 12, 2007 My M1912 ration bags were also missing one of those straps. About a year ago at a military show there on one of the tables for sale was one of the straps. So you never know, you just have to keep your eyes open, Ray
New Romantic Posted April 12, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted April 12, 2007 My M1912 ration bags were also missing one of those straps. About a year ago at a military show there on one of the tables for sale was one of the straps. So you never know, you just have to keep your eyes open, Ray Ray I think I may have a lead on a loose strap. Militaria Market place has the following item Item #: A1490 Web Strap with buckle and weird metal loop (ID #: A1490) $ 3.00 that goes on the M1912 web cantle bags (ones that lace together) - 10 inches long I sent them an email requesting a photo. The strap is about 10 inches in length, but I don't know what the "weird metal loop" MMP is referring to. Perhaps it's the buckle with the small loop? At first I thought MMP was referring to the shoulder strap with D ring, but this is longer than 10 inches.
New Romantic Posted April 13, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted April 13, 2007 A photo of the strap was placed on MMP's website and it is the strap I am missing. All it needs is a spring hook but I know someone who has those.
