cpatrick Posted April 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 8, 2007 Here is a nice little grouping, identified to John Kingsbury, of the 81st New York. Civil War bibles are very collectible, especially if they have a period inscription in them. This Bible is dated 1861, and was put out by the United States Christian Commission, kind of like a paralell group to the YMCA, who was also active during the Civil War. Also present are his extremely rare "Berlin" white dress gloves, also marked with his unit information. I have seen only a handful of these in the past, non recently. To top this lot off, is his brass stencil, with his name, and unit information, also a rare item. Kingsbury was from the the western part of the state, and fought during the early days of the war, most notably, the 7-Days Battles, on the Peninsula, in 1862. For some unknown reason, he was later transfered to the Veteran Reserve Corps, a collection of units reserved usually for wounded soldiers that proved to be unfit for active duty, but were still able to serve in some useful capacity.
