Disney sketches--Navy WAVE subject

I found a hidden treasure among one of my recent purchases! In a scrapbook belonging to a Navy WAVE there were two sketches done in 1944, while she was stationed in Alameda, California. When I saw the artwork I knew it could be something good. Fortunately, the sketch of the WAVE was signed by the artist. The man who made the sketches is Charles "Chuck" Fuson, an artist for Disney! Everyone will recognize the second sketch. Also in the scrapbook was a program from 1943 signed by Zack Mosley. He is the cartoonist who drew the "Smilin' Jack" aviator comic strip. The WAVE who had the scrapbook was a female pilot.

Now that is just cool. I will send you my address, so that you can send them to a proper home! LOL

On a serious note - I think that "DisneyDave", from MCF (Which I know you're a member) would like to see them, and could offer more information. Dave ought to come over here, if he hasn't already. I have not seen him at least.

I love those...GREAT!

The only info I was able to dig-up on Fuson was that he worked at Disney's as an in-betweener from 1953-1960, before becoming involved in the Scamp daily and Sunday newspaper strips, the Merry Menagerie one-shot strip gag and the Pinocchio's Story special newspaper strip. After retiring from Disney's he apparently began painting Monterey Bay area landscapes.

I wonder what his connection to the WAVE was.

Dave---

I did find another reference to Fuson working as an "office boy" at Disney from Jan. 1940 to Sept. 1941. The earliest cartooning credit I could locate is as a layout artist with TV Arts Productions. From 1948-50, he did "Crusader Rabbit." As for his connection to the WAVE, there does not appear to be one. She may have been introduced to him at a party. Considering Fuson used notepaper for the sketches, it seems unlikely he did them as a "street" artist.

Here is the signature by Zack Mosley...
