M-1955 flak vest

I got a 3rd pattern M-1955 USMC flak vest a few weeks ago, for just $30 btw.

 

I was wondering if anyone knew when the 3rd pattern M-55 was put into service, and when the Marines stopped using it. I'm trying to put together a late/post VN Marine set. What is the string going through the eyelets in the collar for? Also, when did the 2nd pattern M-55 come out?

The earliest date in a 2nd pattern M55s I remember is 1967.

judging from photos of the Marines in Beirut Lebanon back in 1983 they are wearing the newer style kevlar body armor in woodland camo.

 

my guess is the 3rd pattern vests became obsolete by the early 1980's?
