GetSome!!! Posted March 31, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 31, 2009 What was the minimum rank to command a army tank in WW2? Also, when it was a Army Sergeant in command of a tank, what rank of Sergeant would he most likely be? In case this makes any difference, I am interested in the Late WW2 Pacific Island army tankers Thanks!
Wailuna Posted April 3, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 3, 2009 ...What was the minimum rank to command a army tank in WW2? This chart comes from another forum, where it was posted in response to a similar question. It gives the rank breakdown of tank crews in a late WWII Army medium tank company. Light tank crews had the same rank structure for tank commanders and a similar, though not identical, rank structure for the balance of the light tank crew (the M24 light tank had a 5-man crew, while the M5 light tank had a 4-man crew, omitting the cannoneer/assistant gunner). This is the medium tank company, with three platoons of five M4 medium tanks each, which each had a crew of five: No. 1 Tank Tank Commander: 1st or 2nd Lieutenant (also the Platoon Commander) Gunner: Corporal Driver: Technician 4th Grade Cannoneer (assistant gunner): Private or PFC Bow Gunner: Private or PFC No. 4 Tank Tank Commander: Staff Sergeant (also the Platoon Sergeant) Gunner: Corporal Driver: Technician 4th Grade Cannoneer (assistant gunner): Private or PFC Bow Gunner: Private or PFC No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 Tank Tank Commander: Sergeant Gunner: Corporal Driver: Technician 5th Grade Cannoneer (assistant gunner): Private or PFC Bow Gunner: Private or PFC Source: TO&E 17-27, Medium Tank Company, Nov. 18, 1944, and TO&E 17-17, Light Tank Company, Nov. 11, 1944.
