Ok, I'm pretty excited. I found a picture posted on ancient faces website of the HQ Company - 5th Marines at Altwied Germany April 1919. There were two pictures and very little information other than what was written on the pictures. The first picture is called "the pioneers" which may be a picture of the "plankowners" of left in the company since forming in Philly. I really do not know and if anyone has an idea please let me know. What I do know is that it's hard to find anything on the headquarters companys.

I'm pretty sure I can pick out my Granddad. Hes the 3rd man in from the left in the 2nd rank. (3rd if your counting the platoon leaders out front) You can see what I think is a expert Rifleman pin on him. Anyhow I just wanted to share these two pictures with people who find them as exciting as I do.

Jon,
Another quick question did they bring Jimbo back with them? Or did he stay in Germany?

Enrique; The website is: www.ancientfaces.com It's not a great site, because your searches are limited - i.e. searching for USMC 5th Regiment is limited to searching WW1. Pictures are posted by users world wide. And alot of the headings that people post do not say what branch or unit or country someones from. It's a pain. But I just got lucky.

As to Jimbo... It's unknown to me. I have seen newsreel clips of the battalions mascott on the history channel before. Same dog. I think this was the mascot of the 17th Company, or Company A of the 1/5.

My Granddad died in 1954. 4 years before I was born. My family says he never spoke of his time in the Marines.

OK, I'm going to some pictures I scanned from my My Grandfathers collection. He passed away in 1954. He only had a few of the pictures with hand written notes, many pictures have no information on them at all but are obivously from his personal collection. I have many other pictures or picture postcards from his collection that are pretty standard WW1 style pictures, planes, sausages, places, etc. Most are very simular to those found in any WW1 picture book.

As with any of the pictures I post that belonged to my granddad, if anyone cares to use them on their websites or publications, all I ask is that my granddad is named , i.e. "from the collection of William H. DeHaven, Pvt USMC 1916 -1920" kind of thing.

First: some of my Grandad

This one may have been taken when he was on leave in August 1919. You can see his great coat hanging up near him.

Post card type picture of William De Haven. He's wearing a marksman pin, so it would be sometime in 1916 at MB Port Royal or in Haiti. He got Sharpshooter and Expert before they went to France. To me he looks so different in each of the pictures.
