Unusual M-1 Flak Helmet Variation

Wouldn't this have required some sort of modified liner as well?

The standard liner was cut out by the ear holes. That was the only modification.

Hello 37th,

Here is another modified helmet that sold a couple of years back and described as "modified for navy use", although there was no provenance. It went for $670.00 I believe. According to a few acquaintances from the the 303rd and 306th BG 8thAF, these were tough to spread, plus some had the sides pounded out (like the one you showed and this one) to take the earcups, in addition to modifying the liner. On a side note, fakers I think would have a hard time preserving the original patina after spreading AND hammering the earcup shape, but who knows. This might make a good thread if others have true modified M1s to show and discuss. The one that sold looked good-I am still searching for one and they are tough! jpstout
