I noticed another thread by fellow member cashman titled 'Background in Photo' in the Misc. / Unknown section. Link: http://www.usmilitar...showtopic=35089

I thought this would be a good place to start an original thread about the similiarities between old photos from the past compared to new pics of the same location.

I'll start with some pictures my Navy grandpa took in Hawaii in 1945.
Everybody share yours.

Here is another one looking at Diamond Head from Koko Head.
Notice all of the buildings and power lines in the modern photo!

The B&W was taken by my Dad in 1945 in Marianbad, Czech. He was housed in this Spa town after battles involving the 16th AD around Pilzen. The Color picture was taken 2004 as I visited. Town is now Marianske Lazne ,Czech Republic. He sayed in the building on the left. Robert

These are great. I have always been fascinated by the "then and now" photos. Keep them coming.

Siege....that's amazing!

Great shots guys!! Well, here are some of my T&N shots. When I was stationed in the UK in the late 1990's, I spent every waking weekend "airfield hunting" and eventually covered about 30 or so RAF and USAAF airfields in East Anglia. I took shots of what I could find and even saved concrete samples from Ridgewell and Lavenham, which I still have. I took with me my copy of Roger Freeman's "Mighty Eighth in Colour" book and got these results. I sure loved finding the spots!!!! I'm a geek.

First one. Here is the classic still from the old Memphis Bell documentary, and the same spot as it was when I found it, along the road to Little Stukley.

When I asked directions to Hardwick, the guy I talked to told me to look for a cross where a B-24 crashed. I found the cross and was absolutely shocked to find a photo in the book of the crash site! I showed it to my wife and we just stood there amazed. The odds....sad as they are.

Sometimes, you find a preserved treasure from the past. Little Walden's tower was restored back in the 80's (I believe) and when I visited it, it was in great shape! The home of the 361st FG was saved from the wrecker.

Now, if you turn around while standing at the front of the tower, you face the road, which was the runway. Here are the shots of that vantage point.

Sudbury was the home of the 486th BG, and many of the loop stands still were extant when I visited. I was thrilled to catch this shot of this B-24. Believe me, the hanger is right where it is supposed to be. I showed it to my wife and she showed some sort of emotion, hehehehehe....

And these shots. My British buddy and I brought our families to France for a week in Normandy. Besides my pilgrimage of retracing Donald Burgett's footsteps, we hit the beaches. These shots are the result, and I was in heaven over doing a T&N of this very recognizable photo. First the then:

Point Du Hoc was the next destination, and we HAD to redo this photo of the breach.

And my last shots. These are also Point Du Hoc. My friend is in the Army shirt.... OK, he's a bit to the right of the original spot.... ;) I hope you enjoyed them!
