world war I nerd Posted March 16, 2020 Share #1 Posted March 16, 2020 I bumped into this insane video a week or so ago on YouTube. This guy is either crazy or nuts, or both! Not only did he butcher and ruin an almost perfectly preserved 1906 Army Emergency Ration, he then proceeded to pry out it's contents and then prepare them per the instructions printed on the outside of the tin ... Any yes he ate the 114 year old contents. Yum. Paradoxically, I'm partially shocked that he ruined the ration, and partially grateful, because by doing so, he allowed us to see what's inside. Check it out and let me know if it was a good move, or bad move? Bon Appetit ...
Fixbayonets! Posted March 16, 2020 Share #2 Posted March 16, 2020 Steve1989 has been doing this with various military rations for a few years now. He has also consumed a piece of Civil War hardtack. As a collector I agree it is painful to watch such a scarce ration be destroyed. On the other hand, he allows us to see aspects of these rations that we as collectors would probably not venture to do. I guess in the long run I find him to be a valuable reference. I have watched most of his videos and find myself refering back to them when needed. Rob
gwb123 Posted March 16, 2020 Share #3 Posted March 16, 2020 I keep waiting for this guy to drop over dead from one of these exploits. Somehow he manages to survive. That is a testament to either his iron stomach (and indifferent taste buds) or the quality of the food when it was packaged.
KurtA Posted March 16, 2020 Share #4 Posted March 16, 2020 The guy may have stumbled upon a cure for the Corona Virus.
sundance Posted March 16, 2020 Share #5 Posted March 16, 2020 I see there is a new show coming up on the History Channel (or some such channel) with the hosts eating old food. I was able recently to pick up a large gold tin of biscuits dated 1962 that I'm sure sat in a civil defense shelter somewhere for years. I don't plan on eating any of its contents. It just reminded me of my "duck and cover" years in early grade school.
BILL THE PATCH Posted March 16, 2020 Share #6 Posted March 16, 2020 Me and member patches used to find civil defense food in a air raid shelter in Queens back in the seventies. It was in a big cardboard drum with metal lid. Full of hard candie. We ate them and I remember them no tasting good but we didn't get sick.
