phantomfixer Posted March 11, 2020 Share #1 Posted March 11, 2020 I am not a medal/awards guy...so hopefully this isn't too stupid a question Why would a Navy A device be on an Army American Campaign ribbon? From an estate of a 20+ year man beginning in late WWII till Nam based on his pictures...pics of him in training in the Army, in Nevada in late 43 and pics of him in Nam sometime also did a stint in Austria occupation force... Salvage Sailor Posted March 11, 2020 Share #2 Posted March 11, 2020 That's not a Navy A device. The USN version has no serifs (i.e. feet) on the A

Salvage Sailor Posted March 11, 2020 Share #4 Posted March 11, 2020 I defer to the medal gurus but a google search states: Currently, the decoration has been reintroduced as the "Arctic Device", awarded by the U.S. Air Force for those who have participated in tours of duty in Arctic locations and received the Air Force Overseas Short Tour Service Ribbon. This version does have serifs or "feet" on the "A".
phantomfixer Posted March 11, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted March 11, 2020 Thanks much for that info... There are pics of him in winter training attire...IE white suits n packs n such...could be his post war occupation time period
Bruce Linz Posted March 11, 2020 Share #6 Posted March 11, 2020 The "A" device on the American Campaign Medal is incorrect. The "A" device (without serifs) is for wear on the American Defense Service Medal and ribbon for service in the Atlantic prior to the start of WWII. The "A" device (with serifs) is for wear on the Air Force Overseas Ribbon - Short Tour this was authorized 10 February 2002.
phantomfixer Posted March 13, 2020 Author Share #7 Posted March 13, 2020 Thank you for the information... No telling why the A was added...or when he was not in the Atlantic prior to Dec 41, that I can observe, nor was he in the AF post 2002... thanks again
