After a long search I finally was able to secure a set of the elusive “Snowflage” I once used in 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). I was issued this winter camo upon my assignment to 10th SFG in 1994. The issue was a large snow cape, a pull over top with a hood and a pair of trousers. I used it on one training deployment to Norway in 1995. I believe it was in late 1996/early 1997 we were directed to turn it in to the Group OCIE. It was replaced by an all-white top and bottom from Cabalas. For reference the mannequin is 6'2" tall.

Once I received this set, I now remember why it was replaced. While it looks “cool” and is light weigh, the material is very thin ripstop nylon. The lightweight aspect was great as these were usually worn over your heavy weight woodland camo color Gortex tops and bottoms. I now recall how easily this camo ripped when put through the paces of hard winter warfare training.

Looking at the over whites one can see that someone put a lot of thought and work into its design and construction. It has a three-color tone of the base material white, black and an off white/crème color. But ultimately, I believe the uniform’s downfall was its extremely light weight construction. I could not find a manufacture’s label in these three items. In the second set of snow trousers there is a label from ECTOTAT.

The snow cape was probably the most durable and useful piece of the issue as I remember it. I remember using the cape to cover my shelter and equipment while in the Mission Support Site (MSS) waiting to link up with the Norwegian Home Guard. It is secure down the front with plastic snap buttons and has a draw string at the bottom.

The Pull Over Jacket has a front half zipper, a zipper pouch and adjusting straps on either side of the pouch. The cuffs and waist are gathered elastic.

The matching trousers have a YKK zipper, draw string and Velcro sizing tabs at the waist and attaching points for suspenders. The bottoms have a gather elastic cuff. The sides have plastic buttons for easy removal and donning.

The second set of Trousers have the ECOTAT label in them. These vary as they are not the ripstop material and the camo almost looks sprayed on. Instead of buttons at the waist it has a Velcro tab. These also have an opening in the normal pocket area so one can reach inside the garment worn underneath. The trouser bottoms have a split that is secured with Velcro. From experience I would say this feature is to allow one to pull them over a set of either Lowa/Scarpa ski/mountaineering boots without having to remove the boots.

Some years ago i got a jacket and pants from eBay but not the poncho. I think it's hard to get by these items, does somebody now how many sets were produced? Is there only the jacket, pants and poncho? On some pics it looks there's a alice pack cover too but i never found any information about it...

The only pack covers I ever saw were the typical all white cloth ones. The cape could be draped over an ALICE pack while wearing it. In the photo I do believe that is his rifle sling behind his neck gives the illusion of it being a separate ruck cover.

This photo is somewhere around the winter of 1995/96 as we received the M4A1 during the late summer of 1995.
