RDUNE Posted February 23, 2020 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2020 Hello all, I bought a Purple Heart off one of the Facebook groups to try and research it but I am getting nowhere. I knew it would be a challenge when I picked it up but I really wanted to figure this one out. Unless I'm doing something wrong, I can't find anyone by this name on any of the main websites (Findagrave, Ancestry, NARA, Newspapers, etc). There are a few guys with similar sounding names but nothing with this spelling. It has adhesive residue on the back that makes me think it was in a shadow box at one point. I'd like to think I'm a semi-savvy researcher but at this point I could definitely use some help. I would greatly appreciate any advice, opinions, insight, etc. Thanks -Ryan

Bodes Posted February 23, 2020 Share #5 Posted February 23, 2020 Is it possible the guy isn't deceased?....Perhaps a WIA recipient who personally had the medal engraved?.....Bodes
everforward Posted February 24, 2020 Share #6 Posted February 24, 2020 Maybe he’s a young guy—most of his data wouldn’t be available to see if not enough time has passed, just sayin.
RDUNE Posted February 24, 2020 Author Share #7 Posted February 24, 2020 I think you guys might be right about him not being deceased. The only thing I've been able to find that might be a possibility is a Michael Dumchock who was wounded in 1944. But no middle initial, and the name being off by 2 letters makes me doubtful that this was his medal. Does the engraving offer any clues? To me it looks Vietnam era but I'm no expert. Is it possible it's from Grenada, Panama, Gulf War, Somalia, etc? Thanks again for the help with this one
KASTAUFFER Posted February 24, 2020 Share #8 Posted February 24, 2020 It looks like USAF engraving from the Korean war. Kurt

Kurt Thanks for the input Kurt, much appreciated Does anyone have or know of any rosters of Korean War USAF Non-KIA Purple Heart recipients that I can check this name against?
