SKIPH Posted February 8, 2020 Share #1 Posted February 8, 2020 Hey Gang! Cruising through ebay found this CASE M4 bayonet, made with a Case M3 dated blade. It has a leather handle, and a CASE stamped WW2 M4 guard. Ebay item # 124073673769, and a starting price of $1799.99. Finish looks OK, but the 1943 has been what appears to be blackened over. It has a "V" cut leather handle w/ spacers. The peening on the tang just does not look right, Anyway, it seems this one occasionally pops up, but never w/ a starting price this high. If anyone can post the ad it would be appreciated. So, let's study this one again. SKIP

sactroop Posted February 8, 2020 Share #5 Posted February 8, 2020 Yes, that "sunburst" peening looks very artistic to my eye. What are those inverted stampings above the tang in the photo? One reminds me of a 4 while another might be a 6.
SKIPH Posted February 9, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted February 9, 2020 Trying to research leather handled M4s with M3 blades seems to be a dead end. The only evidence seems to be the ones that show up on ebay. Which, are very questionable. M.H. Cole does have a leather handled w/ Camillus blade marked(not dated) in book 3. Something to keep in mind, was that blade-dated M3s were discontinued due to blade breakage followed by blade marked. I just can't see why a major M3/M4 maker such as CASE would produce an M4 w/ that potential issue. Also, there are just not any leather handled versions floating around to question the 1950s rebuilds in Japan, handled with plastic, or rubber grips versions. There isn't any photographic evidence to verify proof of any amount of production of leather handled versions of M3 blade-dated, or blade marked M4s. Sadly, this probably was a well put together M4. Unless someone on the forum has a legit leather handled variant. I have a Camillus, and RCC M3 blade stamped M4s. SKIP
Misfit 45 Posted February 9, 2020 Share #7 Posted February 9, 2020 The blade has the M7 look, and the pommel peen and SP looks like it was made in China. Marv
SKIPH Posted February 9, 2020 Author Share #8 Posted February 9, 2020 Marv- Did notice the grind marks on the close up picture. Also want to thank "US Victory Museum" for posting the pics, don't want to forget. Any way, I sure wouldn't drop $1800 for any M4 bayonet, especially one as questionable as this.
