Indeed, he was one of the greats for sure. My father's favorite movie was "Lonely Are The Brave". I have too many favorites to list. What a wonderful actor and human being. RIP Kirk.

To bad, last of the greats from Hollywood's heyday. Detective story is one of my favorites.

Douglas's Officer McLeod ready to put the boots to the unremorseful and unrepentant abortionist doctor Schneider (George Macready), William Bendix in one of his several great roles of course was fantastic in in too as a NYPD Detective.

Did you know the he was originally to be cast as Sargent Stryker USMC Sands of Iwo Jima. He also turned down the role that went to Bill Holden in Stalag 17

Lt Jg Kirk Douglas

Douglas grew up as Izzy Demsky and legally changed his name to Kirk Douglas before entering the Navy during World War II.

Douglas enlisted in the United States Navy in 1941, shortly after the United States entered World War II, where he served as a gunnery and communications officer in anti-submarine warfare on board PC-1139. He was medically discharged for war injuries in 1944. He was deemed too old for the Air Force, but accepted into the Navy. He discharged was due to chronic ameobic dysentary discovered when hospitalized due to abdominal injuries due to dropping of accidental depth charge.

Smooth Sailing Lt.

He seems a breed apart from today's Hollywood types. He was great. I love Seven Days in May. I've watched it more times than I can count. Spartacus is such a classic. Every time I watch it I'm hoping that this time the slave army can pull off a win at the end.

My wife's grandfather lived down the st from Kirk Douglas as a kid up in Fonda NY. She just told me. I guess he was Izzy at the time. My wife said there also a picture of the st where they grew up. On back it said Kirk Douglas lived on This st. I wonder where it is

I bet I can name, maybe, half a dozen current actors; but could compile a very long list of actors from the golden age of Hollywood. And the quality of films today is just plain bad. Between CG graphics, bad acting, bad writing, asinine plots, juvenile action hero movies, when there is a decent film that comes out (1917), it’s an event. Rest easy Kirk...

He enlisted in USN and was sent to Midshipman's School at Notre Dame in 43. He was Communications Officer 18 November 1943 - 24 February 1944 on sub-chaser PC 1139 and received a medical discharge for amoebic dysentery diagnosed while treating "abdominal injuries" resulting from an accidental depth charge detonation. Apparently it did occur in the Pacific but no mention of a Purple Heart. I'm speculating these were internal injuries and no broken skin. Seems like if in a combat zone, and an accident like that occurred that required medical treatment, a PH would have been award-able? Maybe not if when the depth charge detonated, they were not doing depth charging against a target?

Great picture, can you imagine Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper, would be wearing a uniform. Not!!, Golden age of Hollywood will never be repeated.

Absolutely. There will never be the likes of the actors from the GG again and the performances they gave us.
