917601 Posted February 1, 2020 Share #1 Posted February 1, 2020 This new addition was used in the Marine M103 heavy tank. I say Marines, initially these monster tanks were issued to the Army, but they kept only a hundred and the Marines took about 350 in service from the mid 50's to the late 70's. I have the companion inert, black AP round and rare brass case. The AP projectile is 19" tall, and brass case 33" tall. It was our last solid bolt AP round that travelled at about 2600 ft per second. The M103 heavy tank has a fascinating little known history.

917601 Posted February 1, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted February 1, 2020 Another picture. Confirmed the inert black AP-T M358 identical in construction to the target practice Blue TP-T M359 except the target round is a solid bolt of mild steel and the AP is hardened steel. Both weigh the same, 54 lbs. A correction from the TM, they travelled at 3500 feet per second, not 2600 f.p.s....The gun on the heavy tank was taken from the AA artillery piece, capable of 50,000 ft...developed and used in WW2 and pulled from service when missiles were developed in the late 50's.
