Picked this up today and have identified it to Charles E Lay of Sumner County, Kansas. Thrilled to add it to my Kansas collection. Corporal Lay was inducted in October of 1943. Combat patch of the 106th Division, with 5th Medical Battalion DIs (Meyer marked pinnacle) and 5th division on the left shoulder. Sterling combat medic badge. Posted ImageDoesn’t look like he was captured with 106th, he doesn’t appear on the NARA POW list. He passed away in the early 90s and is buried in Sumner County. Been unable to find any other info. I hope you enjoy seeing this one. Thx.

Sweet uniform! I’ve got a Kansas guy from the 338th Inf., 85th ID but haven’t found much more info on him.

Upon repatriation, Americans who had been POWs were among the first to be returned home. The 422nd and 423rd IRs surrendered, but not everyone from those two regts did; the 424th IR did not surrender. Those men in the 422nd or 423rd who did not surrender also ended up in the 424th (or other units) which was attached to the 7th AD and then the 99th ID until Feb 45. The Div was rebuilt with the 3rd and 159th IRS. Both the 422nd and 423rd IRs were rebuilt but attached to the 66th ID late in the war.

Since your GI was not on the POW list, likelihood was he remained in the ETO and was transferred to the 5th ID.

Very nice uniform to a 106th vet, cool backstory too. Love anything combat medic wise and or battle of the bulge stuff for that matter

super------------- do yourself a big favor. check that ike out inside and out for vermin. check the seems and under the collar and so on. don't take it to the cleaners. use a vacuum it. looks as if it was stored in a bad environment.

Thanks guys. I was really excited to find this one for my Kansas collection. I hope to unlock more of his story, but have found zero with my normal google tricks, outside of the Kansas enlistment record and findagrave.

It is in the garage for a few weeks because it stinks to high heaven. Then into the freezer for a few weeks, then gets the lint brush and vacuum.

I have had zero luck finding an obituary. If someone could check one of the subscription sites I would really appreciate it. Thanks again.
