US82Bravo Posted January 19, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 19, 2020 Came across this photo while researching another topic. A 'once in a life-time' combination of events coming together. Caption from Navsource - USS St. George (AV-16) at anchor at Kerama Retto, 29 April 1945. This remarkable photo of a Kamikaze diving on the USS St. George just as the proximity fuse of an anti-aircraft shell fired by the ship detonated. Note the smoke from the AA guns on the stern. An instant later the plane was blown to bits. Photo by Paul D. Guttman PH2/c.- The original photo is at "NavSource Online: Service Ship Photo Archive" - https://www.navsource.org/archives/09/41/4116.htm Here is an extract from the USS St. George War Diary - Extract from "fold3" Larry
manayunkman Posted January 19, 2020 Share #2 Posted January 19, 2020 Truly fantastic. That’s got to be one of the best WW2 pictures of it’s kind. It’s hard to find photos of guns hitting targets from a spectator view.

Salvage Sailor Posted January 19, 2020 Share #4 Posted January 19, 2020 Perfect example of why the USN and other services have Combat Cameramen & Photographers
manayunkman Posted January 19, 2020 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2020 I love how the ship’s camouflage make it look like 2 ships.
