JFP54 Posted January 19, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 19, 2020 "I am posting this question on the behalf of our local historical society museum. They are putting together a display for a Blue Earth, MN WW2 KIA vet who was aboard the "Naughty But Nice" when it was shot down over Rabaul. Here's the question that was forwarded to me. Any help from you insignia and patch experts out there would be greatly appreciated! Referring to the proper display of shoulder patches on the OD 33 enlisted man's winter service tunic, and for someone serving in the 5th Air Force during the period 1942-43, which right shoulder patch would be correct: the Bombardment Group (the 43rd), or the Bombardment Squadron (the 65th)? In addition, where would the triangular blue and orange Flight Engineer patch be worn on the shirt?
Mr.Jerry Posted January 19, 2020 Share #2 Posted January 19, 2020 I am not an expert, but neither patch would have been worn on the 4 pocket uniform. They would have just worn the 5th AAF patch. The triangular qualification patch would have been worn on the lower right sleeve.
tredhed2 Posted January 19, 2020 Share #3 Posted January 19, 2020 Neither of the bomber unit patches would usually have been worn on the 4 pocket. As Mr. Jerry says, 5th AF only. Depending on when the unfortunate GI was KIA, if his death was prior to the AR authorizing a “combat patch”, it may be moot.
JFP54 Posted January 19, 2020 Author Share #4 Posted January 19, 2020 Thanks for your help everyone. I will pass on the replies to the museum director. If he has further questions I'll be back. As for when the "Naughty But Nice" was shot down - it was June 26, 1943.
doyler Posted January 19, 2020 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2020 Agree...Just a 5th on the left sleeve or even a standard Air Corps unassigned patch. Not all would wear the assigned AF patch or had them available.I have photos from an 8th AF pilot receiving his Air Medal in England and hes wearing an Air Corps patch on his 4 pocket at that time.
