Taal Volcano, and Tagaytay, Luzon, The Philippines

My sympathy and best wishes for all the people in the Philippines affected by the Taal volcano eruption. I'm guessing you may have seen the pictures and stories in the news about it.

In 1991, on my first trip to the islands to meet my new in-laws, we stopped on the side of the highway near Tagaytay. My brother in law led me down a footpath through some lush jungle. The trail ended overlooking one of the two most amazingly beautiful natural wonders I've ever seen. We were looking down on Taal Lake from Tagaytay Ridge. I knew we were near the landing zone of the 511th PIR when it combat jumped on the ridge on Feb 3, 1945. But all thoughts of the war were wiped from my mind by the incredible view. These photos off the web don't due justice to the beauty of the place.

I hope Mother Nature settles down soon so the people and the land can start the healing and recovery.

The 511th PIR made a combat jump onto Tagaytay Ridge on Feb 3, 1945 as part of a race to cut off Japanese forces defending the southern approaches to Manila.
