Someone is selling what are supposed to be original Dieges & Clust dies for making Military Airplane Pilot / Senior Pilot wings. Sorry I cannot post the link. Only $15,000 OBO.

(And for the record, I don't know the identity of the seller and have no association with this listing.)

Thanks Russ for posting the photos.

There is an example of a wing presumably made from these dies on Bob's ww2wings.com website in the between the wars section. It was/is Cliff Presley's wing, but Cliff thought these wings were all cast, not die stamped.

I have heard that JoeW now has the Meyer dies. I don't know if he actually makes any die-stamped "museum quality replica" wings or if all his wings are cast copies.

D & C made all three WWII pilot rating wings, and I have heard the basic pilot wing is actually the hardest to find. I don't have any D & C wings, but have seen some in a friend's collection and he does not have one of the basic wings.

Although I think they are purported to be pre-war wings, I suspect many D & C wings may actually just be WWII or post WWII era wings as they are clutch back wings, and D & C appears to have made more hallmarked senior and command pilot wings than basic wings like Josten and Robbins.

as they are clutch back wings,

Not 100%.

I have a D&C Command Pilot Wing Badge like Cliff’s on Bob’s website, but in pin back.

I stand corrected for my inference that all D & C wings were clutch back. There are photos of a D & C command pilot wing on Bob's site as well (also from Cliff P.) and that is also a clutch back wing. In any event all command pilot wings date to WWII at the earliest whether clutch back or pin back.

I offered $250. He countered at $11k. I think I'm out lol.

Hummm, it must have been after you did because I also offered $250 and have received a counter offer for $7,999.

  • 3 weeks later...

I read your post and followed the auction. I received an offer for $4,500 for the initial die. Pretty cool item. $4,490 more than I have in my wallet currently.

They broke the die pattern in a couple of places, so that’s 15k for a pattern die that can’t ever be used for another strike. Hardly seems enough.

great find, thanks for posting
