Opinions on Indian Wars medal

Just acquired in a framed set of medals. I did a quick search on Ebay and found the predictable, people asking outrageous prices for purported originals and the fact they are reproducing them. First one I have owned, post 1917 issue due the black stripes. The metal bar is a little different than most I see, just trying to get an idea when this one was made (and hopefully not yesterday!). There were some loose thread to the ribbon on the reverse that I cut off and did a burn test, burned evening with no oily smoke or dripping. Thanks in advance for the help,

Looks like a US Mint or Robbins from the mid-40s.

They are the only ones I have noticed having the cross-hatch die-strikes for the pin and catch.

Fair enough, thanks for the help. I figured it was not an "original", just glad it was something not struck recently. It came in a framed set of various medals that that belonged to a military US serviceman, he collected and had then framed. His son was downsizing and wanted keep some things and sell the rest. Here are the frames....

On a slot-broach? That is a new one on me...

Always learning...

Based on thick planchet, I'd say this is a 70's restrike. Not official or a later contract.

The badge looks copper-ish in tone, I agree restrike. The ribbon is modern reset on a newer slot brooch. The texture and edges of the ribbon are the tell. The brooch is too shiny IMO to be contemporary or period from a 40s contract. The drape us too long as well.

I bought this one 15 years ago and at that time was told it was a 1953 re-strike. If the slotted broach pin is accepted as older then yours is older than 1953. I have always went by the size of the ribbon, thinking the smaller the ribbon the older the medal. If that is true then my 1953 is older with the smaller ribbon? The dime sized Veteran's medallion I have no information on; but it is liked much.

This is also a restrike for collector market. Not a contract piece. Weird finish, gauge of planchet ring too thick, no inner ring on planchet outer border.

I started to see many of the tougher campaign medals appear at shows and flea markets in the 1970's. The most common characteristic of them was they tended to be too "thick." Luckily, as a younger collector with little money, I couldn't afford the typical asking prices at the time ($40 to $60 or so). Otherwise I would have bought something that wasn't a legit medal.

I did a quick study of the two posted IW medals and noted some differences which makes me believe they were from two different sources. Looking at the reverse side I see that mine, on the left side, below the eagle's wing there are 3 spears and on the OP's medal there are 2 spears. I also see a difference in the detail of the eagle's wing feathers. There may be other differences not noticed. Thanks for the input, keith
