8th ID Posted December 9, 2019 Share #1 Posted December 9, 2019 Hello, Raymond Mathew Schwartz was born on March 14, 1896 in the state of Montana. He is the son of Frank Schwartz and Catherine Macklin. He and his family live in Beaverhead County in the town of Dillon. At the age of 22, he joined the US Army on August 8, 1918, serial number 4268447. He will pass through Camp Fremont and Camp Mills before being assigned to Company A of the 8th Infantry (16th Brigade) of the 8th Infantry Division. He left the United States for France on October 28, 1918, on board the USS President Grant, a troop transport ship built in 1903 and named like that on August 2, 1917. During its troop transport operations, the ship made sixteen round trips between New York and French ports, carrying a total of 40,104 troops to France and 37,025 troops to New York. Raymond Schwartz will pass through Brest, Quimper, Nantes, Jonzac, Pons etc., to Bordeaux and then return to the Pontanezen camp at the end of November as will the entire HQ of the 16th Brigade. He returned to the United States on March 11, 1919, aboard the USS Agamemmon, a German boat built in 1903, which was also requisitioned by the United States while in neutral New York before the country entered the war in 1917. Demobilized on April 22, 1919, Raymond then married with Winifred Margaret Mc Mannis. Back in civilian life, he worked at H.M. Brundage, a funeral home in Dillon. On December 9, 1984, Raymond died at the age of 88 of cancer. He now rests at Mountain View Cemetery, located in Dillon, Beaverhead County, Montana, USA.
