Remarks: The insignia and nickname "Helldivers" was developed in line with basic precepts of the squadron, and registered with the Bureau of Aeronautics.

The blue background represents the limitless sky; the gold triangle and crimson cloak of our "Helldiver", the colors of the United States Marine Corps; the flashing bomb, our primary mission; and the grinning determination of the "Helldiver", the resolution to press the attack fearlessly in the face of all odds. Our official nickname "Helldiver" was derived from the motif of the insignia and the popular name of the aircraft originally assigned the squadron. [Excerpts taken from squadron history.]
