The "Hawky Talky" bird was well known to the American public as one of the characters in the "Barney Google and Snuffy Smith" comic strip. Its ferocity and animosity toward the Japanese symbolized the feelings of squadron personnel. The Corsair on which the "Hawky Talky" is riding denotes the type of aircraft flown by the squadron.
