Abby K-9 Posted January 3, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 3, 2009 If this is the wrong category, please let me know where it belongs. Anyway, by request, here are photos of US military working dogs, WWII and up, from various sources (books, Internet, eBay, etc.)World War IIDid you know Chips actually *bit* General Eisenhower when Ike tried to pet him?Chips is also the reason why dogs are no longer awarded valor medals, such as bronze and silver stars or purple hearts. Chips was given awards for his duty in Italy, and the then commander of the Purple Heart Society wrote the president a nasty letter stating that this cheapened the awards for human soldiers and that working dogs should, if anything, get their own type of award. The rule that female working dogs must be spayed came into effect late in World War II, for obvious reasons.Front Royal, VA dog school. Abby K-9 Posted January 4, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted January 4, 2009 Here's a link to another thread with these great K-9's of the military Oh, thanks for linking. There are some nice photos on that thread, too, but unfortunately most of them are of mascots, not working dogs. Here are some more WWII Working Dog photos, from "Dogs of War". This is a great photo book if you're interested in WWII war dogs, by the way. Highly recommended if you can find a copy. There's also "Dogs at War", which is a lot of dog stories and not a lot of photos. Also a very good book, though. Note: the Marine Corps was the only branch that had and used a "dog record book".Food consists of horse meat, kibble, raw eggs, and condensed milk. Abby K-9 Posted January 4, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted January 4, 2009 More from "Dogs of War".You don't hear too much about pack and sled dogs. The Army Air Forces actually had pack and sled dog teams to get to downed pilots and aircraft in some areas, such as Greenland, where it was the only fast and efficient way to get there and recover pilots and equipment. The dog kennels used here are the dogs' wooden transport crates.

Abby K-9 Posted January 5, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted January 5, 2009 Cold War Photos. Basically photos taken between the late 1940's and late 1980's, except photos from Korea and Vietnam.Late 1940's Germany. Look at the dog boots! That is one humongous dog! I think this is the earliest photo I have of a Malinois working with the US military. ] Any idea where this was taken? I don't think it's a Desert Shield/Storm photo..
