Last night my garage was broken into in Modesto, CA. Among the items stolen was a huge US hat badge collection amassed over a 35 year period. the collection was hugely complete with examples of 99% of known examples and variations covering 1917 through 1947 from all branches of the US military and Maritime services , easily 350 badges. Approximately 75 were mounted on a red mat board ready to be framed. Also stolen were a US Typhus Commission Medal set and a US Medal of Merit set both in WW2 period ultra rare titled cases. Please be on alert for the possibility of someone trying to sell this hoard and/or large numbers of vary rare hat badges beginning to show up.

I would also appreciate if you all would pass the word through the collector/dealer community.

I am sick about this and realize the likelihood of any of these being recovered is virtually nil.

Thank you

Jim Weitkamp

Do you happen to have pictures of your collection?  May help if we see certain items back out on the market somewhere.

Would also alert local pawn shops, antique stores, and gold / silver reclamation centers.

Darn shame!....Hope you are able to recoup your collection....If items stolen were limited to your military collectibles, it may have been somebody who knew what you had....Have you contacted the local authorities?.....Again, I hope this ends well, Bodes

Damn shame.  I hope the SOB who did this to you gets caught and has some time in jail to think about what they did to you.  My sincere wishes that you are able to recover your property.  Will be alert out here on the East Coast.

Make sure the burglary report has very detailed descriptions and digital photos. Don't let the the PD take a report with generic information and dedcriptions.
These type of stolen items do not disappear into a black hole. Some junkie will sell them and they could show up where alerted collectors, etc. Will see them. A reward might work too. No honor among thieves.

I'm going to dig up what pics I have and get them posted. I have an old post in the Display section of the forum showing a small portion of what was taken. Having trouble posting the link

Posted 03 December 2014  Almost ready for the frame. I'm missing an ATC badge, a Merchant Marine Academy with the device centered on the anchor, and a nice USMC officers dress EGA. I'm looking for a Meyer type on the latter. I started collecting these badges about 20 years ago and I have variations on about 2/3 of those shown. Let me know if you see any obvious examples I might be missing. I used the 1943 National Geographic and a couple of other references to compile these.

I'll spread the word around the Sacramento area.  I hope this all works out in the end.

Was just your garage targeted?

Anything else taken?

Did someone know they were there?

That makes me sick, I'm so sorry to hear about that. : (   The lost value is one thing, but all those years of collecting makes it much worse. Hopefully they will catch the a-hole and retrieve your items.
