Hi Phil, I recently sold off all my female collection ( and a lot of the rest of the collection ) I have attached photos of two shirts, one is summer chino and one wool, it's not set in stone but if your aunt served in the Continental States then a summer shirt might suffice, if she served in Europe then maybe the wool version.

It has been recorded in various veteran statements that various units arriving in the UK in 1942 were still wearing the summer chino shirts they wore in the warmer training areas of the States, however wool shirts were soon issued once they were in the cooler climates of the UK. I sold some of my female veteran groupings and there were both summer and wool shirts in these groupings.

I hope that details of both shirts are easy to see the small pockets, the darts ( pleats ) above and below the pockets and obviously buttoning the opposite side to a means shirt.

Nice shot of your aunt I hope my post helps.

lewis.

Thank you Lewis,

Your information and the pic's helped greatly.

My Aunt was stationed in the CBI theater of operations.(India) She was also attached to a USAAF command while there.

So would I be correct in thinking due to the heat she would have gone with the cotton?

Also Would she of had a tie and if so, was it a female's tie of just a regular tie?

Hi Phil, one would suspect that as she wearing the winter weight jacket that she would be wearing the corresponding wool shirt and cotton mohair necktie, however the shade of shirt and tie look a lot lighter to the jacket and as you mentioned she served in the CBI theatre then she could actually be wearing the tropical worsted khaki shirt and tie. ???

Shown below is a grouping from one woman WAC member there is a mixture off winter and summer clothing in this grouping, top left is the womens M-43 jacket and pants, three tropical worsted khaki shirts, middle left the winter M-43 liner, to the right the tropical worsted one piece dress, a poplin raincoat and woollen liner, over on the right a winter wool overcoat, bottom left tropical jacket, in the centre are two neckties one cotton mohair and on the right of the two a tropical worsted khaki necktie, she also has tropical and woollen versions of the womens garrison cap.

It might well be that the photograph of your aunt is an un-official shot as she is not wearing head-cover ?? and if it is un-official she might well have made her own choice of what shirt, necktie and jacket she felt comfortable with. ??? is it a shot that was taken once she returned home.

Hi Phil, I am not suggesting that these are the caps that your aunt would have worn with that jacket, just to try and show you if possible the tropical wool shirt material that she might be wearing as she served in the CBI, the left and centre are the tropical worsted and the label is from the centre cap.

Trying to assess what your aunt is wearing from that one photograph is very difficult, I hope that you can decide which you want to go with, its a complex problem given all the styles, colors and materials that they were issued with, it's not as black and white as one would wish it to be.

I was totally shocked to be speaking to a veteran US paratrooper in Nijmagen, Holland twenty-five years ago and I asked him which back-pack they were wearing by this time, he replied that his unit were using the un-camouflaged version of the ' jungle ' pack, I have to say I found it hard to believe until I saw photographic evidence, ' jungle ' packs being used in Europe ????

Thank you very much again Lewis,

I think that pic is before going to the CBI. The uniform I showed in this thread (Last Post) is the one she brought home and put away. You can see the CBI patch and also there is the AAF patch on her right shoulder.

http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/213743-my-great-aunt-annes-cbi-uniforms/

All the other pic's I have of her in the CBI are black and white and that doesn't help with color .

That is a wonderful selection of WAC uniforms. I wish I would of known you before that sale of them. I could of use some of those!!!

Once again Thank You Sir!!

Hi Phil, thanks for your comments, only pleased to help if I can. That's a very interesting shirt conversion of your aunts with the CBI patch on in your link above, it's been made from a womens shirt into a ' British ' style battledress jacket the style of which was favoured by Eisenhower and nicknamed the ' Ike ' jacket.

I liked and collected a lot of these oddities of converted uniform and equipment pieces, heres one I just sold in my last auction. It's an American mens shirt shortened and belted into a battledress style, all the buttons have been changed to Polish ones, and the insignia on the front pocket is for the Polish 1st Armored Division.

be nice if you added those other photographs of your aunts clothing to this thread.

I am glad to hear I am not bothering you. There are not many WAC collectors and I am really enjoying seeing what you had. I have over a 100 pic's of my Aunts time in the service. A lot are her on her time off visiting various places in India. Some are from Kurachi and the Tj Mahal and other place in India. Some are of the office she worked in. It would be my pleasure to share them with you. I had to resize some of these due to the image size restrictions.

Here are a small batch of what I have of her in uniform.

Hi Phil, thanks you're not bothering me in the least, I may have had a bunch of uniform stuff, but you have a bunch of your aunts photos always missing from my groupings ! !.

You asked me about the auctions I had, there was a two day auction in May 2018, and a second two day auction in May 2019, approximately 2,000 items from my collections were sold in these two auctions. Below is the link for the first days auction in 2018, down the left hand side of the page are the various sections the auction house laid out so you could click on these and work through each section. To the right of each section in red square are the words ' plus de detail ' click on this and more images of that item will be seen. At the bottom of the column of sections should be the link to the following days sale, Part Two. Some of the sections have two or three pages these will appear in the bottom right corner when you scroll down the page through the photo's. only the start prices appear to the right of the photo, the realised prices have been deleted post auction date.

You had an amazing collection Mr. Lewis. I loved the cold steel section( another love of mine) and I'm also passionate about the USAAF, as my uncle served in the 8th AF and I currently have a 99 year old friend who went down with my Uncle when their B17 was shot down.(Priceless information) . My interest have turned toward those items since 2010.
I must say I am a little humbled that you are helping me.
Thank you again Sir!

Hello Phil, thanks for enjoying the photos at the links I provided, I have forwarded you a few more images of the ' cold-steel ' items to your email address as this thread is about your aunts photos and not my collection.

Only happy to have tried to help you, however if there is something to be gleaned from one of the images that you added that all uniforms are not uniform. If we look at the uniform of the four women notice that one is wearing a sweater, three have laced shoes but the one far right wears strap and buckle shoes, also considering that this shot is in the CBI area the one on the right is wearing wool shirt and skirt.

Please do not feel ' humbled ' there is no need to, the word humbled, Mr Lewis or Sir I find embarrassing titles, I always refer to myself as lewis, please feel free to also use that.

regards lewis.

Hello Lewis,

You are correct, when I zoom in it does look like my Aunt is wearing a sweater and that the shoes are a different type of fastening. Some with laces and the end Girl with the CBI patch has the buckle type. I am not up to date on the type of shoes they were allowed to wear. I know for AAF officers, that they just had to have them in russet brown. I have seen high tops, laces and buckle types in period photo's of member's of the AAF..

I am not sure of the uniform restriction that would have been enforced in Karachi where she was stationed with the AAF.

I do have MANY pictures of her in civilian clothing while in the CBI. I know that Men had to be in uniform, But it looks like women did not have to follow that rule, Or My Aunt was a risk taker along with her crew of merry WAC's and they liked to push the limits.

I have to get a scanner to do anymore of her vast collection of pic's she has. I'll look into getting myself one or try using the one I have here at work.

Looking forward to more insight from your knowledge of these WAC's..

Take care

Thank you 338,

I had gotten my aunts collection back in 2010 and I looked up my first post about them on another site and saw that I had said I had shirt's , skirt's ,blouse's and a garrison/overseas cap.. But for the life of me I couldn't remember where I had put them. I totally forgot about them. But since it has cooled down here in Arizona, I started searching my Garage last week for the box they came in. I found it in the back corner covered up by some other boxes. So needless to say. I found her shirts and skirts for her WAC uniform. There were 3 shirts inside the box. 1 SSgt,1 Sgt.and 1 tailor made slick sleeve along with her wool, cotton and khaki skirts. I still need to get a tie for those shirts. So I'm good for the ID parts of this thread.

I do greatly appreciate the help everyone has given me and do apologize if I inconvenienced anybody.

Hello Dorothy,

I'm glad you like these items as much as I do.

My Aunt was a wonderful lady, You could tell that she had seen the world and experienced what most woman wished they had done.

I just got a scanner as a Xmas gift. Everybody knew I needed to save the photo's I have digitally to share with others. So they bought me one. AWESOME!!!!!

I am currently working on some WW1 Photo's that I have of an American 1st Lt (Friend of Family)stationed with the French artillery unit during WW1.

I had promised those years ago and I finally can get them scanned a shared.

Once I am done with these Pre and Post artillery barrage pic's, I will start on the WAC photo's I have from my Aunt's time in the service.

I will gladly share them with you and I also need to get them scanned to share with Lewis. I did promise him and I will keep that promise.

Thanks for keeping the memory of the WAC's alive with you reenacting.

I'll visit you FB page when I get home from work.

Take care
