Bob Hudson Posted September 24, 2019 Share #1 Posted September 24, 2019 In 1931 the USS PITTSBUGH (CA 4) made it's last cruise before heading home to the scrap yard. Dwight F Davis, the Governor General of the Philippines, was the VIP guest for the 45 day cruise from February 28 to April 15. On April 22 the Pittsburgh left Manilla and sailed west enroute to Norfolk via the Suez Canal. She was decommissioned on July 10th and sold for scrap. The 114-page cruise book CRUISIN' GROUND is a nice piece of work and is likely fairly scarce. Damage is not too bad for an 88 year old softcover book although someone cut out a corner of the back cover. Were cruise books common in that era? Bob Hudson Posted September 24, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted September 24, 2019 The VIP was Dwight F. Davis, who served as Governor General of the Philippines and US Secretary of War and was the donor of the Davis Cup for tennis. Wikipedia says "Davis trained at the Preparedness Movement Citizens' Military Training Camp in 1915. From 1916 to 1917 he toured Europe as part of the Rockefeller War Relief Board. With war declared Davis enlisted as a private in the Missouri National Guard and was commissioned in August 1917. Going to France, Davis was promoted to Major and became adjutant of the 69th Infantry Brigade of the 35th Infantry Division. During this period he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. After the war he was a Colonel in the Army Reserves. In 1942 Davis was the first and only Director General of the short lived Army Specialist Corps. On the disbandment of the unit became an advisor with the rank of Major General."
