Tribute to the Devil Dogs of Belleau Wood by Sabaton Hvy Metal Band

While trying to find some online information, I came across this tribute to the Marines of 2nd Division AEF and their Baptism of Fire at Belleau Wood. The Swedish Heavy Metal Band SABATON has recently put out an album with WWI songs; this is one of the songs. Below are the links to the music videos. The first is best, but the one with the Spanish subtitles is pretty good as well. Enjoy all you Devil Dogs.

For those who do not know it, Belleau Wood saved the Marine Corps from absorption into the U.S. Army. If it had not been for a cockup by Pershing's PR Staff in the AEF, the Marine Corps might have ceased to exist in the Post-WWI U.S. Military Drawdown.

Here is a great site dedicated to the 2nd Division AEF which the Marines were part of in World War One.

The Marines were part of the AEF 2nd Division; the only American Division put together entirely in France in 1917. The Division consisted of a Brigade of US Army Regulars (3rd Brigade) with two Regular Army Regiments the 9th and 23rd Infantry Regiments, and a Brigade of Marines (4th Brigade) with two Marine Regiments the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments.

Always nice to see Marines get the attention they deserve even from a Swedish heavy metal band! Hope they fix the typo for Paris in the first subtitle. Thanks for sharing, love the original footage.

Just curious.....I wonder if they had to get permission from the NMMC at Quantico to use their video (the first one) since it's the one made for the museum? Anyway, nice tribute.

I was wondering the same thing as well. However, I think it is an excellent recruiting tool for the Marines and zero cost to them.

If I were eighteen again, I might have chosen the Marines instead of enlisting as as an Airborne Infantry soldier with assignment to 2nd Airborne Ranger Battalion, 75th Infantry back in '76. LOL How time flies.

That is not an official video, it is a fan made video, so likely no permission. The guys in Sabaton are good friends and I spent some time onstage with them in Feb 2018 for the WWI centennial. They have a love for history and do their best to entertain and keep things as accurate as possible. Devil Dogs is great but 82nd All The Way is better in my opinion. Though both pale in comparison to the title track "Great War". Here are a those videos and a short spot I had them do for my museum. Scott

Thanks for posting these, Big John. Very enjoyable. Both videos make great use of the official USMC National Museum production and appear to include additional video from the production that was not used. You would have made a great Marine, John as you did an Airborne Ranger! Semper Fi - Bob
