917601 Posted September 4, 2019 Share #1 Posted September 4, 2019 I ran across this article on Aberdeen Proving ground red " X" markings. Looking like a bubba mark, it is not. Aberdeen hand painted, marked ordnance that it emptied or deactivated with red X's. Many Ordnance manufacturers used their own markings to denote safe. I have a few Ordnace pieces that are stamped with " SS", that was punched into the body by Yuma testing ground denoting " safe steel" ( a few 81mm mortar rounds, a 75mm Skysweeper round, and a 76mm Walker Bulldog round). opus5150 Posted September 22, 2019 Share #3 Posted September 22, 2019 British Mills bombs were marked with red X's to signify they were moisture proofed and ready for the jungle. Maybe this marking method was transferred to the early WW2 American frag pictured here. Just a guess.
