Keith Posted August 29, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 29, 2019 1945, Army Air Forces Lieutenant, B-29 Crew Radar Operator. What kind of wings would this Officer wear? Thanks.
TBMflyer Posted August 29, 2019 Share #2 Posted August 29, 2019 Keith, I believe most officer R/O's wore the Observer wing. Hope this helps, Mark
Keith Posted August 29, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted August 29, 2019 Thanks Mark, because he came with two 3" wings; a Navigator and an Observer. So now I know which wing was his! Thanks. keith PS: He was on a B-29 so perhaps he manned both of those positions at one time or another and had the appropriate wings to wear? Thinking more about this; there also was an E-6B Dead Reckoning computer with him so it looks like he did both...
bobgee Posted August 30, 2019 Share #4 Posted August 30, 2019 Navigators often qualified by training for both wings. I had a friend who was a B-17 Navigator in the 8th Air Force & he told me he wore the "Flying O" because he liked it better. Go figure!
